You felt your stomach twist from Miles' words. The anxiety of what could happen next was suffocating everyone in the room. Miles could either approach this calmly, or he could create a huge mess out of this. Either way, you still pitied him. You knew Miguel wouldn't let Miles do anything about his canon event regardless. Miles suddenly bends over in pain, holding his throbbing head. You reach for him in concern, before he snaps up.
Breathing heavily, he says to himself softly, "Spot does it." His shoulders slump and he stares to the ground, "He kills him."
Seeing this poor child in front of you, exposed to the truth, and now having to sit through it, it's understandable how unfair it is. But as much as you want to defend Miles and even help him get back home, visions of Gabriella and the destruction of her world would override those thoughts. And you go back to square one on Miguel's side.
Miguel stares long and hard at Miles, contemplating his next move. Miles slowly glares up at him, "When does it happen?"
He remains quiet and turns to pass a questionable look to you. You shake your head, telling him with your eyes that if Miles finds out it's too soon, he'll do anything to get what he wants. Miguel continues to watch you as if he was lost in his own thoughts to come to a decision.
Miles' patience is running thin; he turns around to face everyone, "When does it happen?"
Finally, Miguel sighs and looks back to him in defeat. Your heart drops and you quickly grip Miguel's arm to stop him, but it was too late.
"In two days," Miguel tells him, his hands still resting on his hips. "When he's sworn in."
"That's . . . what the model says." Lyla includes quietly beside you.
Miles takes a step back, his eyes darting everywhere. You knew he was in a state of despair, so you tried to ease him. "Oh, Miles. You have to understand-"
"Send me home!" Miles ignores you and glowers at Miguel.
"I can't do that," Miguel replies sternly. "Not now."
Miles throws his hands up, and you feel the anger simmering in him, "What am I supposed to do? Just let him die?!"
You frown at Miles, feeling strongly empathic towards him. If only things didn't work the way they were; if only you didn't have the trauma that stops you from siding with Miles; if only you could find the courage to break free against the canon. But you can't, as much as you want to.
Miguel stares intently at him; his expression answering Miles' question. Miles' face drops and he swings around to face Gwen: "What about your dad? He's the captain. Right?"
Gwen's face depresses as she manages to utter, "Yeah."
"And that's it?" Miles raises his voice. "You're just not gonna do anything about it?"
Gwen couldn't bring herself to answer him, so she only looks down to the ground in shame. Miles desperately turns to Peter, "Okay, what about Uncle Ben? That'd've been okay if you knew, and you just . . . let it play out?!"
The more you thought about Miles' point, the more you started to agree with him. If you had known your Aunt Louise was going to die, of course, you would have done something! But . . .
Peter reaches out to place his hand on the distressed boy's shoulder, "If not for Uncle Ben, most of us wouldn't be here, Miles."
Your mind thinks back to your dying Aunt Louise, who could do nothing but murmur her last words to you, "Continuez votre histoire . . ." (Continue your story)
Peter was right. If it wasn't for your Aunt Louise, you would have never pursued to be a mysterious, justice-serving spider. That also applied to many other spiders as well. Most of all, you wouldn't be standing here beside the love of your life, working to save the entire multiverse with him.
