As we entered the family room, I noticed the warm and inviting atmosphere. The room was spacious, with comfortable couches and a large flat-screen TV. The walls were adorned with family portraits, showcasing the Valentine family through generations.

Marco was eager to play board games, and Mateo seemed enthusiastic about the idea as well. Nicolas, on the other hand, appeared distant and disinterested, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. It was evident that he was still skeptical about our presence and was keeping a close eye on us.

As we settled into playing the games, I noticed Juliet's joyous laughter as she engaged with Marco and Mateo. She seemed to fit in effortlessly, her playful spirit shining through. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this moment of happiness, knowing how much it meant to her.

Throughout the games, I made an effort to connect with the brothers, showing genuine interest in their lives and hobbies. While Nicolas remained reserved, Mateo opened up a little, sharing his passion for photography.

I stared intensely at my cards, contemplating my next move. Mateo threw down a red 3, and I scanned my hand, finding no red cards or threes.

I glanced at Nicolas, knowing that the outcome of my card would affect him, and smirked. Swiftly, I snatched a card and slammed it onto the coffee table.

"Take four," Nicolas's eyes widened as he hastily searched his cards, hoping to find a card that could spare him from his fate.

His panicked and shocked expression quickly transformed into a wicked grin.

"No... you take eight!" Nicolas exclaimed, pointing at Juliet. Juliet pulled another +4 card and placed it on top of the previous one.

However, unlike the rest of us, Juliet seemed to feel remorseful for Marco and gave him an "it's not personal, I'm sorry" look.

Marco pouted, "That's not fair! I'm pretty sure it's not even allowed!" he argued.

"Nah, it's allowed," Mateo chimed in nonchalantly.

"No, it's not!"

"Yes, it is," Nicolas hissed, growing frustrated. After a while, Marco gave up and collected his twelve cards while muttering to himself.

We had been playing for a while now, and this was our third round. Mateo had won one, while I had won two.

Juliet, Nicolas, and Marco hadn't won yet, although I could tell that Marco and Juliet didn't mind losing. However, Nicolas was furious. I quickly learned that he was a sore loser and would become easily frustrated.

"You're pretty good. Have you played before?" Mateo asked me.

"No, but it's not difficult. I find it similar to poker, where you can win by reading your opponents' moves and being patient," I replied.
