Kyou stood there, his words hanging in the air, but Hitori's response was not what he expected. She slumped against the wall, as if deflating, her expression was void of any emotion at all.
"Gotoh-san? You there?"
The pink-haired girl immediately snapped back into reality and sat up almost immediately. Hitori's cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she realized she had drifted off again. She quickly averted her gaze, feeling her shyness taking over. It was always difficult for her to engage in conversations, especially with someone like Kyou who seemed so outgoing and confident.
"Y-y-you saw... it?"
Kyou nodded, his expression warm and reassuring. "Yes, I saw your performance last night. I thought you did pretty well."
"PRETTY WELL?!" The inside of Hitori's mind screamed, "HE KNOWS I SUCK! HE THINKS I'M A LIAR!"
"You were unfamiliar with the material, weren't you?" He asked her, causing her to look up towards him, "Plus you were only just thrown into that band at random, so you weren't really familiar with their flow."
Hitori looked a bit confused. How had he been able to tell?
"H-how'd you know that...?" She asked him, a bewildered look on her face.
"It's happened to me a couple times. When I first played with my old band, and when I played with my sisters for the first time, it's pretty easy to tell." Kyou smiled, "You did great for those things to be limiting your skill, if anything it's a sign that you're probably a very good guitarist."
Hitori's confusion deepened at Kyou's response. She hadn't expected him to understand her situation so well. His own experiences resonated with her, and it made her feel a little less alone in her struggles.
"Thank you..." she whispered, her voice tinged with both surprise and gratitude. "I... I guess I never really thought about it that way."
"Would I be able to sit here for the rest of our break?" The purple-haired boy asked the embarrassed girl sitting in front of him, "I promise I won't try and make you uncomfortable at all."
Hitori looked up at Kyou, her eyes wide with surprise. She hadn't expected anyone to ever ask to spend time with her. His kindness touched her, and she found herself nodding, a faint blush coloring her cheeks.
"Yeah... that's fine," she replied softly, nodding her head a little, "Sit wherever you'd like..."
Kyou smiled a bit and took a seat against the wall, sitting a little less than a metre away from her. He grabbed a small box of food he had originally brought with him and began to eat his food in the company of his classmate.
Feeling a bit more at ease, Hitori gathered her courage and turned to face Kyou. Her voice was still soft but steady. "So, um... thank you for being so understanding about my performance last night. It means... a lot..."
"Yeah... no problem..." He responded.
As they sat there in silence, Hitori felt a mix of relief and gratitude. She appreciated Kyou's understanding and willingness to offer support, even if he couldn't fully grasp the extent of her embarrassment.
A hint of a smile began to play on her lips. "I-It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has moments like that..."
Kyou slightly chuckled, a light-hearted expression on his face. "Trust me, we all have our fair share of embarrassing moments. It's what makes us, us I guess."
A sudden thought washed through Kyou's head, causing him to shut his eyes and rest his head against the wall in a plight of embarrassment."
Hitori freaked out a little.
"Have I... killed him? Did my presence bore him to death? AHHH!!! I'm so bad at making friends..."
Kyou brought his head forward and opened his eyes, looking at Hitori.
"There was this... one-time last year when I played with my old band." He began to tell her, "We had all gotten ready to play one of our songs, so we started, but I had accidentally begun playing the bassline to Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz... so I got a few glares and we had to restart..."
Hitori's eyes widened in surprise as Kyou shared his own embarrassing moment. She couldn't help but let out a small giggle, covering her mouth with her hand to stifle the sound.
"Oh... that must have been quite an awkward moment," she managed to say, her cheeks turning slightly pink. "But it's kind of funny too."
"Yeah, it was definitely awkward," Kyou admitted, a playful grin tugging at the corners of his lips. "I couldn't believe I had mixed up the bassline like that. Maybe because I had the song stuck in my head pretty much the entire day..."
"It is a pretty catchy song... I can't blame you..." Hitori told him.
"You know it?" Kyou asked her, "Not many people I talk to seem to know much western music."
"Yeah, I do..." Hitori responded, nodding, a little embarrassed the topic had shifted to her interests, "I have listened to a lot of western rock music..."
"That's awesome!" Kyou exclaimed, shocking the girl sitting near him a little, "Got any favourite western bands?"
A light, fluffy feeling began to wash over Hitori. This was the first time someone had wanted to know anything about her interests at all.
"U-Uhmm... Radiohead... Korn and... Slowdive are a few..." She responded shyly. What if Kyou hated those bands???
"Really? Radiohead and Korn are great choices," Kyou replied, his eyes lighting up with genuine interest. "I'll have to check out Slowdive. It's always exciting to discover new music."
Hitori gave a small smile, she was about to say something else but was cut off by the bell ringing out through the school hallways.
"Well, we should probably head back to class now." Kyou told the pink-haired girl as he begun to get up off the floor, "I'll see you back there."
As he began to walk off, Hitori attempted to call out to him.
"Uhh... A-Adachi-san?"
Kyou turned around to face her. "What's up?"
Hitori hesitated for a moment, her cheeks turning a faint shade of pink. She gathered her courage and spoke softly, but with determination. "T-Thank you... for talking to me today. It was... really nice."
He smiled at her, "Friends?"
Hitori's eyes widened in surprise, her heart skipping a beat. The word "friends" resonated within her, bringing a surge of joy and excitement. She couldn't believe her ears—someone wanted to be her friend. It was almost as if fireworks had gone off inside of her brain.
"Y-Yes... please..."
Kyou gave her another smile, "Well let's get to class then, don't wanna be late!"
