Regulus and Sirius Black were not as close as they used to be. Growing up in an abusive household took a toll on the oldest Black leading him to live with the Potter's, leaving his baby brother behind without a word. Regulus was claimed to be the 'favourite child'; not knowing he experiences the abuse too.
Truthfully, Regulus only held a slight grudge but will always secretly love his brother like he did back when he was 5.
As they grew apart, he found peace in being friends with Nova. He would even say best friends but can't help to want more. Evan and Nova were there for him when his brother ran away and he is always there for them. They are each others person.
Regulus isn't stupid. He sees the way the 6'2 Lupin boy stares at his girl and must admit to feeling a strong protectiveness over her. Nova has always struggled with noise and overwhelming situations and he helps her during tough times, grounding her and letting her cuddle into him when she needs some balance. He can only hope that Lupin backs off.
Nova practically lived alone. An unusual thing to hear yet her parents died traumatically, getting tragically killed by a muggle murderer in front of her eyes when she was in her 3rd year, leaving her uncle to look after her and now he's never home, seemingly always away for 'work' now but she knows he just doesn't love her nor want to be near her. She reminds him too much of his late sister. He used to shout at her all day every day leaving her afraid of raised voices. No one truly knows the pain and suffer she's been through.
Regulus and Evan mostly spend most of their breaks at her house so she isn't alone. They worry massively about her. Now in their 6th year they still find her in situations where she forgets to eat and drink, unable to take care of herself. She's improved slightly since her worst times but some days are still tougher than others.
