"Come on, please?" Skaldi begged as she tugged her twin's hand, Skade sighed and followed her. Skaldi was overjoyed when her magic seemed to kick in, she reached down to gently guide something into her hand, Skade arched an eyebrow when the girl turned and held out a butterfly with a deformed wing.

"Look, sister!" Skade watched proudly as Skaldi chanted softly and they watched in fascination as the butterfly flew away in a beautiful purple haze.

"Before long you will grow more powerful than me." Skade teased as she picked out the leaves in Skaldi's blonde hair.

"That is not true sister, you will always be the one with more power. And I am glad for that, who else would be able to protect me?" Skaldi whispered as she hugged the fellow seer.

Skaldi would never know that her claim would haunt Skade for the rest of her life.

Skade and Skaldi were bound by magic, one was destined to die and the other to live. Where Skade was harsh and brash, Skaldi was quiet and observant. When Skade became attuned to dark magic, Skaldi had chosen the magic of light and nature.

One cannot exist without the other.

However, with the fate that was bestowed onto them, the twins were forced apart in theory.

Skaldi had been alone when it happened, their father had lashed out at her and said things that would have Skade beyond angry had she heard it. But Skaldi didn't care, she needed to get away. She needed to be alone for now and find a way to avoid their father.

He was cruel with his words sharp sad blades and often made her uncomfortable with his promises of marrying her to a lord for land.

Unfortunately, Skaldi hadn't accounted for a scorned witch, her father's lover that was tossed aside like day-old potatoes. Skaldi hugged herself as she walked deeper into the forest, she rubbed her arms to bring some warmth back. In her mission to escape, she had failed to bring a cloak or pay attention to her surroundings.

She was lost and cold.

That day, she experienced the worst pain imaginable. She had heaved and gagged for hours hoping something would come up, but nothing ever did. Instead, her throat was clogged with hair and her skin turned purple from the lack of air. Her eyes and ears bleed black as the witch laughed above her wickedly, she failed to realize their father didn't care about them. The witch's plan had backfired.

Skade had killed their father that day. She was beyond furious when she found her sister dying a slow death and her stomach branded with the witch's sigil. The smell of burning flesh and death made Skade's blood run cold, she shook her head and picked up her sister. The smell would stick with her forever.

She may have been twelve but she sure as hell wasn't going to leave her sister behind in the woods. She would carry her for hours on end if she had to. Skaldi convulsed in her twin's arms multiple times that day, each time making Skade want to cry and beg the Gods to take her instead.

To free her sister, her innocent sister.

Skade walked past the blood pooling around the door of their hut, she ignored her father's body as she laid her sister on the dinner table. She proceeded to do every spell and curse she could, but nothing worked. With each spell, the worse Skaldi became.

Skade wept each time her sister panicked and clawed at her throat, Skade sobbed when blood poured from her sister's eyes, and Skade wailed when Skaldi's heart stopped beating for a brief moment that felt like it lasted hours.

Skade knew she wasn't strong enough. She was terrified that she never would be. So, the twelve-year-old cast a curse on her twin, to avoid the inevitable death of Skaldi, she would be placed into a magically induced sleep until the cure was found.

She would only be woken for one of two reasons, Skade's death or the cure.

And a decade later, Skade sat in the corner of a cold and dark cave. The seer kept the sleeping blonde deep within the grotto to ensure her sister's safety. She bit the inside of her jaw as she walked to Skaldi, she felt her mind splintering from the silence, she longed to hear her sisters laugh again. Skade leaned down and kissed her twin's forehead and caressed Skaldi's face gently.

"I miss you, Skaldi." Skade confessed as she raked her fingers through the knots forming and blinked away the tears. She would not cry. She had to be strong for Skaldi. She needed to find the damn cure as quickly as possible. Time was beginning to run out it seemed.

Skaldi's life was fading more every day.
