The next morning, Gabe dropped Rose and Liam off at school and headed into town to find Angela's company.
He eventually found it, tucked away in a little backstreet. The front of the building was nondescript, and only a small sign in the window beside the door proclaimed the nature of the business.
He pushed open the door and found himself in a well-lit reception area. A long wooden desk seated two receptionists, and a wall of colourful photographs displayed the escorts available for hire.
"Can I help you, sir?" One of the receptionists asked. She saw him eyeing the photographs, and smiled. "Are you interesting in hiring one of our ladies? Or gentlemen?"
"No, I'd like to see Angela, please. Angela Lee."
"Do you have an appointment?"
"No. She wants me to join the company, and told me to come and see her when I'd had a chance to think about it."
"I see. Take a seat, and I'll be with you in one moment."
The woman disappeared through a door beside the desk.
When she reappeared a few minutes later, Angela was with her.
"Gabriel." Angela came over to shake his hand. "It's good to see you again. Come up to my office, and we can talk."
He followed her up a rickety staircase, and into the first of only two rooms upstairs.
Angela settled herself behind her desk, and motioned for Gabe to sit across from her.
"Have you had a change to think about my offer?" She asked.
"Yes," Gabriel said slowly. "And... while I would like to stop..." He sighed. "You can't offer me enough money to make it worth my while."
"Do you have a large family?"
"There are five of us."
"And none of the others can work?"
Gabe frowned.
"Jordan does some babysitting work occasionally. And he helps some of the younger kids at his school with their schoolwork. Sometimes their parents will give him some money, as a thank you. Phoebe is a bit young, but she babysits occasionally. If I know the family."
"Would you like to try the five dates we offer?" Angela asked. "You can at least earn some money while you consider a little longer."
Gabriel hesitated.
"I don't... have any clothes that are... appropriate," he said slowly. "And I don't have the money to spend on new clothes if I won't be using them again."
"You're a good-looking young man, Gabriel. I think it's entirely likely you'll soon become popular with our female clients. And some of our male ones, too."
"You can't guarantee that," he said.
"Very well. You look about the same size as my nephew. He is perhaps a little broader in the shoulders. I'll borrow a few clothes from him, for you to wear on your dates."
Gabe sighed, before he nodded.
"Excellent. I'll have your photograph put on our website, and on the board downstairs, and I'll let you know as soon as a client wishes to book you. How should I contact you?"
Gabe shrugged.
"I don't have a mobile phone. I've got the house phone, but if you ring, you can't tell any of my brothers or sisters why you're calling."
Angela nodded, and noted down the number he recited to her.
"How do I get to... wherever I have to go? I don't have a car."
