Amber's eyes fluttered open as she stirred from her deep slumber on a quiet Sunday afternoon. She groaned softly as she heard her phone buzz on her nightstand. Amber rolled over and lazily tilted her phone towards her, she saw three text messages from her best friend, Abby.
Abby(11:13 am): Yo! Are we still hanging out today?
Abby(12:45pm): Are you seriously still asleep?
Abby(1:25pm): Alright, I'm on my way, but you better be up missy!
Amber smiled gently before her eyes drifted to the time, 1:35pm, she sprang out of bed and gently jogged to her bathroom. She flicked on the light and looked at herself in the mirror, her eyes drifted to the large crack in the bottom left corner and her breath hitched. It had been from one of her "episodes", she had a bit of a breakdown when her boyfriend, Ryan, had broken up with her. In her mind, she was very suspicious that he had only dated her to get in her pants. He had taken her virginity about a week and a half before he dropped her. Unfortunately, she still had to see him at school, which only made things harder.
Her mind flashed back to her staring into this exact mirror with tears streaming down her face. Her face morphed into deep anger before she slammed her fist into the corner of the mirror, causing a few cracks to branch out from her fist. Amber brought her hand away from the mirror and looked at her bloodied knuckles. She showed no pain on her face, thankfully her father wasn't home to see it as he surely would be angry. Although it wouldn't be anger that was directed towards her for breaking the mirror, it would be anger towards Ryan for making her feel this way.
Amber snapped back to reality, she shook her head gently to shove the bad memories back where they belong. She sighed as she picked up her hairbrush and began running it through her dark brown locks. She closed one of her eyes in a straining attempt to get through the long and wavy hair that had knotted in her sleep. After her hair had finally been tamed enough for her liking, she brushed her teeth, rinsing and spitting into the sink. She walked downstairs to find her house empty...again.
Her father worked a lot, but he was all Amber had since her mom died when she was seven. A lot of the time, his shifts would start around noon and go until midnight, she didn't get to see him much. Her head snapped to the door when she heard knocking on it. She walked to her front door and swung it open, revealing Abby on her doorstep. She was an interesting girl, she was often gentle and soft-spoken, but her personality was the polar opposite.
"What's up, fucker?" Amber greeted her best friend in the manner to which they were accustomed.
Abby smiled, "Well, looks who ACTUALLY awake, lazy fuck." She snickered before entering Amber's home. The two sat down on her couch in the living room and switched on the TV. Abby reached into her pocket and pulled out a thin object that kind of resembled a pen, but Amber knew it was Abby's THC vape pen. Abby wordlessly passed it to Amber after she had taken a hardy puff. Amber took it from her and brought it to her lips, she pressed the small silver button on the pen and inhaled for a few seconds before releasing. She leaned her head back and exhaled, a pillar of smoke extending towards the ceiling. She knew that her father would lecture her about the smell, but right now she didn't care.
"Hey, how's your dad doing?" Abby finally broke the silence.
"He's alright, I think. Fuck if I know, I haven't had the chance to actually talk to him in days, he's either at work or asleep." Amber responded, her head still resting on the back of the couch. She took another puff, she was starting to feel the early stages of the high.
"Man...I'm sorry Amber, that's gotta suck." She said before she held her hand out for Amber to return her vape pen.
"Eh, it's not a big deal. I'm used to it at this point." Amber responded as she returned Abby's pen. Abby gave her a somber look, she knew that honeyed words wouldn't get Amber to open up. She never opens up, not since Ryan. The two friends sat in silence, broken by the occasional half assed joke about the show they were watching, which caused them to crack up for a while.
"Hey, you mind if I stay the night here? I'm too stoned to walk home tonight haha." Abby asked her friend.
"Sure, my bed is big enough to share." Amber responded in a fake sultry voice.
"Ohhh thank you, Mi Amore" Abby responded with a fake flirty voice, causing the pair to laugh again.
Nothing much occurred in the hours before they went to bed. Gently falling asleep in Amber's comfy and plush bed.
The last restful sleep that these girls would experience for quite some time.
