Life with Zeke was wonderful. I laughed everyday, made friends with his maids, rode horses, ran, read, and learnt how to play piano. I had freedom, something I always wondered if it was possible for me. And Zeke…he was amazing. Always there, looking as gorgeous as ever. I didn’t know how it was possible for Timothy to hate him.

It has been fourteen days since I ran away, six days since Zeke offered me his home, two days since war started. Yes, war.

One of Ezekiel’s men betrayed him and told Timothy my whereabouts. He was not pleased to hear the news: I was living with his younger brother. He immediately demanded his brother to ‘hand me back to where I belong’ and when Zeke didn’t do it, Timothy declared war. I do not get why they’re making so much trouble just for me, a nobody.

Right now, I’m watching how Zeke's house burns down. There’s fire everywhere I look; the gardens, the house, the carriage. Everything he once built is now being burnt down because of me, because I ran away, because I was selfish enough to only think about me and my future.

I heard a distant voice calling my name, but I couldn’t move. My legs didn’t wish to move. I knew this was my fault.

“Ellie, we have to go!” Zeke grabbed my shoulders. “Please, Ellie, they’re going to find us,” he looked at me with pleading eyes. I couldn’t help but notice we were both covered in ashes and sweat.

I opened my mouth to speak but it only came out a loud sob.

He picked me up and started running towards the woods. I wasn’t the skinniest woman alive, I wasn’t the biggest either but he was still running fast.

We didn’t go far. He tripped and we fell down hill.

“Zeke are you alright?” I asked when I caught my breath.

He groaned.

“Zeke please,” I sobbed. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t worry, Ellie,” he whispered. “I’m good you, it’s not—they’re coming,” he declared looking behind me. “Work with me, Ellie, we’ll get out of this alive. I promise, mi lady,” he looked around and smiled. “Do you know how to swim?”

I looked in the same direction as him and nodded. The river.

We got up and stood in front of the river, he got in silently but I didn’t even touch the water.

“What’s wrong?” he whispered. “We’re going to get caught.”

“I can’t do it, my dress won’t let me. I have to tear it apart,” I said embarrassed.  Silence. At that moment, the ground was the most interesting thing in the world. I heard Zeke getting out of the water.

“Don’t move,” he said in my ear. “I have a knife and I’ll rip your dress, you seem like you can’t breathe,” he chuckled.

Was it really that obvious? And how can he joke in such a serious moment?

            I blushed.

            Then it hit me.

“What am I going to wear?”

“I’ll give you my top, it’s not transparent that means I won’t see anything if you wear it.”

            I nodded.

            Rip. Rip, rip.

“You have a beautiful back, is your skin as soft as it looks?”

            “Zeke!” I blushed.

“Oh, sorry, right, um. Hold it up front and here,” he handed me his top. “Go change, do it as fast as you can.”

I practically ran. Once I was behind the tree I dropped my dress and as soon as it hit the floor I put on Zeke’s top. It was long; it came down to the middle of my thigh, that’s long, yes?

I was now aware of how cold it was around us. I was barefoot, short top, basically naked, hell it couldn’t get worse. Wait, it could. I was going to swim. Wonderful!

            “Are you done?” Zeke whispered.

“Yeah,” I said coming to view.

His eyes traveled from head to toe and he gulped.

“That was a bad idea, you look…”

I looked at him and blushed. Because one, of what he said and two, because his body was really attractive.

Snap. Something was really close. Snap.

“Jump!” he screamed taking my hand and jumping towards the river.

Water filled my lungs while I tried my best to make it to the surface. When I finally did I was coughing water. A hand wrapped around my waist and started pulling.

“No! Ellie!” I heard him screaming.

It wasn’t Zeke who was pulling me, it was him.

I screamed my lungs out, despite how much my throat hurt I needed to be close to Zeke, he was my hero and we both knew that.

“Ellie stop struggling, you’re coming with me,” Timothy whispered in my ear.

I looked at Zeke and saw how one of Timothy’s men shot an arrow towards him.

“No!” I cried.

The arrow hit his heart.
