I had a little inspiration with this start from another book so I'm going to adapt it into this one if that's okay.

I have no idea how to write this beginning.

Jason's Pov

An unfamiliar sensation on my arm pulled me from a dreamless sleep. I sat up with a wince, groaning and clutching my left forearm. My eyes were still blurry with sleep, but I could clearly make out the one thing that was out of place; a strange crystal the size of a credit card, embedded into my skin.

"What in the..." My fatigue quickly washed away as I scratched at it. It didn't hurt to touch, but I had to admit, having it attached to my arm was just unnerving. I was completely confused; I didn't recall going anywhere where I could have acquired it. There was no redness around it, no tenderness or swelling showing it was new. It was just there, stuck in my arm.

I shook my head in order to clear it but ended up getting more confused when I saw where I woke up. Sand, warm from basking in the heat of the sun for hours, slipped between my fingers, feeling gritty and coarse. The hot sun beat down on my face forcing me to squint my eyes. From the little I could see through my narrowed eyes; tall trees were scattered on the beach I found myself on.

The clean air was wonderful on the skin and airways, and I would have enjoyed being here if it wasn't for one little thing. A minor detail. I had no idea how I got there. There were no drag marks or footprints leading to my body. It was if I was just dropped there.

"Where the heck am I?" I asked, although there was no one around to ask, so I was just talking to myself. The situation was confusing, and it made my mind spin like clothes in a dryer. I just sat there, looking towards the water but not actually looking at the water. I was staring out into space, my mind filled with many unanswered questions.

I finally stood, cracking my sore back on the way up. A light wind blew right past my face, cool and gentle. This would make a perfect vacation spot; too bad I have no idea what beach this is.

Walking slowly, my feet sunk into the warm sand with every step I took. Where was I walking to? I had no idea. I was just mindlessly walking along the beach. After walking a few feet from my wake-up spot, I took a moment to look at my surroundings beyond the beach.

On one side was water that went on farther than I could see and on the other was endless jungle. With the ocean stretching along the beach as I walked, I gained the conclusion that I was on some island.

Beyond the jungle I saw the tops of what I assumed were either volcanoes or mountains, possibly both. But it was what was above it that specifically caught my eye. I halted; eyes bugged out as I looked up. In the distance was what looked like a giant pillar floating above the island. They didn't look at all man-made and it was lit with a bright green pillar. It shone bright, probably illuminating the whole island at night.

Just the sight of it, even from the distance I was from, was intimidating. My eyes drifted down to the thing on my arm. It looked very similar to the pillar, so I found myself wondering if it was made by whoever made that pillar.

"Hello? Is there anyone out there?" I called out to anyone who might be nearby. I waited a moment, but nothing was spoken. A familiar feeling of unease and loneliness washed over me.

I guess there isn't anyone around to hear me. Where is everybody? I just need someone to tell me where the heck I am.

There was a splash in the water, followed by a loud gasp. My head instinctively snapped around, eyes focusing on the sound. "Where the heck am I?" A voice cried. I gasped in shock. Sitting up in the shallow water was a person. A guy around my age.
