Win asked the moment he woke up from the stupor induced by the detoxification of his system.
"No, why?" Eva cocked her head to the side after feeling Win's forehead with the back of her hand to check his temperature.
"Hasn't he texted yet?" Win licked his cracked lips as Eva went beside him and propped up his pillows so he can sit up comfortably.
"He said he ran into a little trouble but he is on his way home and we shouldn't worry too much," Eva explained in an even tone even as she strained under her son's weight while helping him sit up and taking care not to tug on the IV line still attached to the prince's left hand.
"I knew it! What kind of trouble? Didn't he say anything more?" Win scooted backward so he can sit as lying down for hours makes him feel more lethargic.
"You know your Dad, Winfred. He might not be as young as you but he knows his way around these things, trust me," Eva reassured her son as she planted a kiss on the top of Win's head.
"How sure are you that it was him texting?" Win looked at his mother suspiciously, inwardly wondering why she is still so calm even with the knowledge that his father ran into some sort of trouble.
"He didn't text, he called while you were asleep. He sounded excited rather than terrified," Eva said matter-of-factly, her even tone effectively hiding the trepidation inside her after she heard about the little mishap his husband encountered on their way home from the speaking engagement.
"You sure, Mom?" Win prodded as he felt the uneasiness in his mother's mood.
"Eliza is with him plus his trusty bodyguard and driver, which is a formidable team in itself. Strength doesn't always come with numbers, son," Eva smiled through her worries. She didn't want Win to worry more in light of the prince's current condition.
"I don't want to be complacent, Mom," Win said with brows furrowed in annoyance and helplessness.
"I am not complacent, Winfred. I just learned to trust your father's judgment, I know his heart is in the right place like you," Eva said as she sat on a chair at the bedside before reaching for Win's free hand.
Winfred said nothing but lay back down on the pillow and kept his eyes fixed on the light fixture overhead. Eva started rubbing the back of the prince's hand comfortingly in the way that she always does to calm her son and lull him to sleep. Before drowsiness overtook Win again, he sent out a silent prayer for the safety of his father.
Please don't let anything bad happen to my father. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if that happens.
