"I missed you, son," Eva said as she took Win in a tender yet crushing embrace when the latter entered the heavily tinted vehicle. She winced slightly when she caught the unmistakable whiff of sex on her son's warm body but she held her tongue. She knows that the prince might still be hurting badly at the moment.
"I'm sorry for being such a troublemaker, Mom," Win buried his nose into his mother's shoulder, inhaling the calming scent of the mild perfume she has worn since he was a child.
"I should be the one who is apologizing. It is not right to put this much burden on your shoulders," Eva rubbed her son's back comfortingly even as the vehicle started to move away from the alley.
"I was born into this curse, Mom. I know my duties and I never go back on my word," Win pulled back from the embrace and seated himself beside his mother while reaching for her hand.
"How was..." Eva hesitated, conscious of the ears tuned into their conversation as the partition between them and the handful of guards that escorted her was too thin for private conversations. Win seemed to understand her concern nonetheless.
"Not good. Mom, I feel like my heart has just been ripped out of my chest. It's a miracle I am still breathing," Win lamented even as he squeezed his mother's hand to seek some comfort in her presence.
"You must really love them," Eva said matter-of-factly, her voice devoid of judgment.
"Yes, my other family. I already miss them so bad," Win admitted with a heartbreaking sigh that Eva felt in her heart. She is too familiar with the feeling of having to let go of everything that you have grown accustomed to because you need to embrace your reality and future.
"Do they know? Everything?" Eva prodded gently as she squeezed her son's hand reassuringly, urging him to open up his heart to her.
"Not everything. They would abhor me if they knew who I really was," Win sighed guiltily as he absently laid his head on his mother's shoulder like how he did when he was still young and seeking solace from his mother's presence.
"Then it would have been for the best. It's easy to forget someone you hate," Eva said with such bitterness behind her tender tone and Win bit his lower lip absently at the thought.
"I can't bear to think that they would hate me for something I have no control over," Win almost sobbed, heart already breaking while he imagines the look of betrayal in Bryce's expressive eyes.
"The truth will always set you free, my son. Anyway, they would eventually know about your secret before this month ends," Eva intimated and Win immediately knew that he is trapped and there is no way he could turn his back on his privilege and the responsibility that goes with it.
Once they do, they will surely hate even my memory. Especially Bryce.
