sabs walked into the library and plopped down at the table eli, demetri, and miguel were sitting at.

she was wearing a black, cropped hoodie with the hood over her head.

her whole weekend consisted of being home alone and crying and smoking tons of weed.

"is she okay?" miguel whispered and pointed to sabs.

sabs picked up her head.

"does it look like i'm okay?"

there were tears in her eyes, dark circles underneath, and her eyes were red from both crying and from being high.

"not really." demetri shook her head.

"then you have your answer."

all the boys looked at each other and she looked around at all of them with a blank stare.

"what?"

miguel shook his head. "nothing."

demetri squinted at her. "your eyes are so red."

"yeah."

"are you high?" he whispered.

"shhh, people can hear you!" she whisper-shouted.

"no, they can hear you. why are you high?" demetri questioned.

"cause."

"cause why?"

"cause why not."

"you're impossible." demetri shook his head.

"sabs." eli whispered and reached for her hand.

she quickly pulled her hand back.

he looked down sadly and she sighed then put her head down on the table again.

"so that's it? no more karate?" demetri asked miguel.

"i guess so." he replied.

"it's probably for the best. it was starting to boost your confidence." demetri said.

sabs groaned.

they all looked at her.

"what sabs?" demetri sighed.

"i'm hungryyyyy." she groaned.

eli sighed and pulled out a granola bar and pushed it across the table. when ur hit her arm, sabs picked her head up.

"who gave me this?" she questioned.

eli slowly raised his hand.

"ugh."

he looked down sadly again.

"but i'll eat it. i have the munchies and this is the only thing in front of me, so..."

she then opened it and took a big bite.

"anyway, isn't that a good thing? that it boosted my confidence?" miguel raised his eyebrows.

"no. what has confidence ever gotten anyone except for a black eye and their backpack thrown in the trash." demetri responded.

sabs giggled. "remember that one time that happened to you, meat?"

"yeah. and i don't know why you think it's funny." he shook his head.

"because backpacks don't belong in the trash." she answered.

she then started laughing hysterically and a few people shushed her.

"sorry, sorry."

she then sniffed and took another bite of the granola bar.

"well, i thought it was kind of cool how you stood up to kyler." eli spoke up.

sabs rolled her eyes at kyler's name and eli silently looked at the girl.

"are you insane? let me ask you, what is the best superpower anyone could have?" demetri asked.

"super strength."

"wrong—."

"ooh ooh, moving stuff with your mind." sabs said.

demetri shook his head and continued.

"it's invisibility. a distant second would be super speed to run away fast."

sabs looked up and saw kyler and brucks behind eli and miguel.

sabs shook her head and quickly grabbed her things.

"run away from who?" kyler whispered.

while they were all distracted sabs got up with all of her things and made her way out of the library.

she let out a long breath and swallowed.

she wasn't afraid of kyler and brucks, but he didn't want them to bring up yasmine. that's why she hasn't even talked to sam since the dance.

she started running down the hallway. she was worried about the boys, but she was also worried about herself. she didn't want to talk about yasmine. she couldn't.

"sabrina!"

sabs stopped in her tracks. she felt cold.

he was calling her by her real name. he never did.

she slowly turned around and he walked over to her while miguel and demetri watched from behind.

"why did you run off?" he asked.

she didn't reply.

"you couldn't stick around to help us?"

she scoffed. "you want me to help you? after you told me i couldn't stand up to these people? and after..."

"after what happened at the halloween dance. i know. i saw when i got home. that was so wrong. i'm so—."

"don't, eli. don't tell me you're sorry. it's not your fault, plus it doesn't do shit. yasmine's evil. i should've seen this coming."

"no. you shouldn't have. you shouldn't have seen it coming because friends don't do that to friends." eli replied.

"i know. which is why yasmine isn't my friend and hasn't ever really been my friend. i doubt she will ever be my friend ever again, especially if i have something to say about it. i mean, now people are either scared of me or make fun of me when i eat, but i don't care. i escaped yasmine. and i can feel like myself again." she explained.

eli went over and wrapped her into a hug. she let out a breath and hugged him back.

"i'm sorry for saying you have no idea what it's like to be bullied." he apologized.

"thank you. and i'm sorry that i wasn't a better friend." she replied.

"it's not your fault. you were scared."

"i was. i really was."

she exhaled and kissed him on the cheek before they pulled away.

the bell rang and she nodded.

"see you."

"bye."

she then walked away and eli turned around.

"well that actually went well." demetri said.

eli let out a breath.

he wasn't losing her.

for now.
