What if the hard working Detective Tanjiro was given the bounty for the vigilantes?
The Emperor's Dragon: The Detective Gets the Bounty
Detective Tanjiro slumped at his desk, raising one hand to rub at his temples. He'd had a long night but the day was going to be even longer.
What a disaster!
With the help of All Might's agency, he'd... they'd found the perps who'd attacked the young lady, Ochaco Uraraka. And even before charging them with anything, All Might had gotten permission to bring them all in. The former Number One Hero said it was for their protection and while Tanjiro had gone along with it, he wasn't sure what they were protecting the perps from.
Sure, Ochaco was friends with Izuku Midoriya, but the kid stole quirks, he wasn't a murderer. And sure there were probably others who thought the group hadn't gone far enough with Ochaco but they'd just grumble online. And there were those who probably thought they'd gone too far but again... online grumbling and they'd let the Police deal with the situation.
So he hadn't been sure what they were protecting the perps from.
He knew now.
It was Izuku. But not Izuku.
They were protecting them from the underworld boogie man known as Dragon.
You didn't get to be a Detective without knowing at least a few of the underworld mythos. Dragon was one of those ones that seemed to have been around forever and just didn't go away. Every time people forgot him, something happened that pushed the man back into front of mind. Even with that though, there was never even evidence about Dragon to claim anything definitive.
There was now.
The perps had all been brought in, and he'd been preparing the charge sheets, to lay the charges this morning. Now they had to fill out vastly more complicated paperwork... like so complicated there wasn't actually a template for it.
Last night... early this morning actually, a warp gate had opened in the holding cells and a group, grandiosely named The League of Villains had grabbed the perps. All of them.
The kid, Izuku Midoriya, had been seen leading them. The operation had been slick and by the time officers scrambled to intervene, the villains had gone, retreating back through the warp gate with their prizes.
And he now had to create paperwork to report on how the force had lost the perps from holding cells.
He did not want to do this. Tanjiro had wanted to go down to the cells this morning and lay charges. The most serious ones were against a man named Bokusen Shoko, also known as the vigilante Edge Dart. Tanjiro wouldn't have been surprised if that case had been taken by All Might's agency. The man was a known vigilante and heroes tended to take those cases. The next most serious charges were against Nishita Omimi. She'd actually posted the thread that had led to the attack on Ochaco, and had gone along, and then failed to render assistance. If she'd just posted, she probably would have gotten a scolding but joining in was crossing the line and not rendering assistance... that just proved guilt in his mind.
But Tanjiro knew the courts didn't always work like that.
The courts probably weren't going to work in this case.
All Might had been in the holding cells after the perps had been taken and the usually smiling hero had been frowning. He'd been concerned, and disappointed, and angry all at once. He'd eventually stared long and hard at the point where the warp gate had formed before shaking his head and walking away.
Tanjiro had no idea what that meant.
He sighed, and opened his eyes. It meant that he'd probably have to write the paperwork himself. It meant that All Might's agency would be distancing themselves from the Police which would leave him taking the heat.
That's what happened in the past.
And he'd just gotten to Detective!
Tanjiro sighed again. He might be busted back to beat cop for this but he was going to do his job until that happened. He flicked his eyes over his desk, looking for a pen. He had a cup for them but they never stayed there.
That's when he saw it.
It was an envelope. Plain brown, and quite thick.
He hadn't left it there. It had not been on his desk when he'd stopped writing up the charges to deal with the ... he couldn't call it an escape... the kidnapping? That implied a ransom. Abduction? That was better. The charge sheets were under the envelope, so it had been delivered sometime overnight.
Sure there were cops working at all hours but... On the top of the envelope, in neat handwriting was his full name and title. Detective Tanjiro Chikano.
"Did anyone see who left this?" He called out.
"Left what?" came the reply.
"This envelope!" Tanjiro snapped back, holding it up. The fact that it was in the station, on his desk, meant it had gone through security screenings.
'No idea.' It wasn't actually said but from the head shakes and shrugs, Tanjiro knew no one had left it there or knew who had.
He sighed. That wasn't too unusual. It could have been one of the night shift and they'd all been dismissed earlier after being questioned.
There was nothing for it but to open the envelope. He sat back down and tilted it to the side. The seal had a tab pull on it, and before Tanjiro opened it, he ran his hands over the envelope. It appeared to contain paper, if the hardness and size was anything to go by. He pulled the opening tab and then tipped the contents out onto his desk.
"What the fuck..?"
The exclamation brought the attention of others and Tanjiro saw them stare at his desk.
There, on it, in neatly bound bundles was cash. Yen. Notes of 10,000 tied off with bank paper. There were seven bundles, and five looked to be the same size. The remaining two bundles were bigger, about twice the size of the others. There was a small folded piece of paper amongst the currency.
"You'd better read that," Tanjiro recognised Henshu's voice. The man worked for All Might's agency. He was standing at the front of the crowd that had gathered to see the cash.
Tanjiro bit his lip and reached for the note. He gulped as he plucked it out of the cash and slowly unfolded it. The writing on the inside matched the handwriting on the envelope. At least he thought it did. Forensics would be able to tell for sure.
Detective Tanjiro Chikano,
Thank-you for your dedication to Ochaco's case. As advertised, please find enclosed the bounty promised for identification of her assailants. 1.5million yen, each for:
Naoshi Toba
Yuurou Fushino
Kokora Eto
Atsuya Gushiken
Shuji Uchida
3 million yen each for Bokusen Shoko and Nishita Omimi.
As you did not deliver them to me, I am unable to double the bounty, but given your dedication, I will add my favour.
Dragon
Well, fuck. There went his career.
-ted-
The guy deserves it, and since he genuinely wanted to solve the case, this isn't a bad payment for Izuku to make. Pity about the career. Probably should have given it to him in Private and then seen if he'd sign up like the good Captain... but in Izuku's case, he'll live and learn.
This is not canon, as Bokusen is still free. It's just a funny little thing for enjoyment.
My discord is on this code: TcBnRN7aDn Wattpad will remove links but you should be able to figure that out. There's a heap of other authors there, so come along and chat to us all!
