Davina's POV
SILENCE HANGS HEAVY IN THE DIMNESS OF THE CABIN; two souls trapped in the ghosts of a friendship's remains. Vodka, once the catalyst of carefree laughter, now seemed like a bittersweet elixir, dancing in the light and mirroring the flickering flame of what we had once been, its seduction losing its power over us.
Within moments, a brilliant flash of lightning sears across the sky, momentarily illuminating the cabin's interior with an ethereal glow. I struggle to keep my cool, not wanting to share further weakness with the woman in front of me, knowing that I had already given her too much. But the room fell into sudden darkness, lights flickering and succumbing to the storm's relentless assault.
"Shit." I whisper, placing my glass on the floor, "Where's the fuse box?"
"Hold on let me just get out my copy of the cabin's electrical blueprint." Emily quips, her words oozing with sarcastic charm.
I throw off the cushion on my lap, standing abruptly, "Shut up and help me find it."
I step around our chairs, using just the light from the moon and occasional streaks of lightning to make my way through the room, fingers dancing on furniture, drawing a mental map of the room. Emily groans, but I can soon feel her presence behind me as we search the walls of the kitchen.
"I can't find it." She sighs almost instantly.
I shake my head, continuing to search, "You really put your entire mite into looking didn't you."
"Why can't we just sit in the dark?"
"You might be half vampire, but I for one like being able to see, and that usually involves lights," I mutter, my words lost in the shuffle of our feet against the wooden floors.
I feel the edge of the counter, "Mine at home is above the upper cupboards. I'm going to climb up."
"Oh, because that's smart." She drawls.
I feel around for a safe spot then pull myself up to kneel on the counter, "Help me or not. I actually don't care anymore."
I stand slowly, grabbing onto the upper cabinets as leverage until I'm level with the veneer of dust which covers them, swallowing a cough as it reaches my nose. I begin to feel around, shimmying down the side of the kitchen. I almost lose my balance, but Emily's hands quickly secure themselves to the back of my thighs, a position which I was definitely not prepared for.
"You get any higher and I might have to report you." I joke, trying to distract myself from the shameful scenarios my mind was painting of the situation.
