"Did you hear that the king appointed a woman in the cavalry?"

He turned his head around to look at his friend in disbelief.

"She is very dedicated and a good fighter, just like her late father who died a heroic death in the last fight." Ethan's friend whispered into his ear as they sat on the ground, watching the sun set over the top of the distant hill. Their knight helmets rested behind them on the ground, swords laying by their side.

The battle that had taken place two years ago, where several soldiers had died a heroic death while tackling a planned assassination of the king, backed by an enemy kingdom.

And the said woman's father was one of them.

A hum left Ethan's lips, his eyes tearing away from the spot where the sun had just set.

"It would be interesting to meet this female for which the king had to make an exception."

Alina was mounted on her horse, making her way towards the ranks to be given her task for the day. It had already been a couple of days since she finally started working with the others but all this time it was mostly going through the routines and learning, helping her choose which all tasks she preferred.

She heard the clacking of another horse, turning around to see a young male sitting on it wearing a familiar type of armor.

Of course, she was facing a knight— one of the most sought after ranks but only a few of them achieved it. They were very respectable soldiers but some of them had a mean demeanor apart from being in the presence of king, the ego being the main reason.

"So, you're the girl the king made an exception for?" He asked, tugging the reins lightly to make the horse stop. Her heart beat slightly faster in anticipation, one of her hand pressed against the horse's back as she too, came to a stop.

"Yes." She said curtly, not sure if it was worth saying anything more which might make her end up in trouble in her initial days knowing his tone of speaking was definitely anything other than being genuinely polite.

Ethan was about to call his comrade from a distance when he held back after noticing whom he was talking to. He got down his horse and walked slowly towards them, the sound of the metal armor clinking drowned by the other senior officers who barked orders to the trainees behind him.

He heard the fellow knight make a backhanded compliment, erupting into chuckles right after it while the female just stared at him, her expression hard and unreadable.

"I would watch my mouth if I were you, mister. It would be pretty shameful to loose your job of respect if the king hears his knight is engaging into petty squabbles than doing his own duty." She casually retorted, causing the chuckles to stop abruptly. Ethan sensed that the situation was very tense as if it were a string of an armed bow, ready to fire any second. He walked over to his comrade and took his horse's reins in his hands, trying to lead it away from the woman.

"Let's go, we need to get to work." He said, causing the male to look down at him.

"I'll be watching you."  The knight warned the new recruit, pulling the reins hard and galloping away in another direction to where he was supposed to be headed earlier.

Ethan sighed in relief on breaking away a possible argument that would've led to problems. He could feel the stare of the young woman who was mounted on her horse, even though he still had his helmet on. He turned around to see her climb down to the ground, standing at his level.

"Don't take him seriously, nobody really does." He chuckled, noticing her pat the horse's neck comfortingly, adjusting the leather straps on it.

"I will not, I've encountered many men like him. It is not very uncommon." She stated, looking at him with a smile. He stretched out his hand to which she shook it as to mark their meeting formally. Ethan was about to open his mouth to say something when his friend called his name out from far, telling him to hurry up.

"We shall meet again." She said softly with a curt nod at his direction, grabbing the saddle to mount her horse and proceed to leave the spot to get on with her job. Ethan looked at the direction where she rode away, slightly in awe after being in presence of a person with rather a very unconventional approach.

"I'd look forward to it."
