"C'mon, wake up, you skxawng!" I'm abruptly woken up by a familiar light blue idiot's face. "What Ao'nung?" I ask, rubbing my eyes."C'mon, Tsireya, and I wanna go on an Ilu ride before our lessons. " I roll my eyes and grab a new top. One that was made out of rope and other things and adorned with shells and pearls.
Ao'nung calls the Ilu with the click of his tongue, and with a few whoops, the majestic Ilu swims our way. We all jump down into the water and onto the Ilu forming tsaheylu. I've always felt safe and secure in my home. But even more so with my siblings. I'm not saying that the reef isn't safe. Tsireya and my ilu twirl around each other as Ao'nung watches from afar 'I have to go' Ao'nung signs underwater. I nod and hug him, waving him goodbye. Ao'nung is my older brother by only a few months, while Tsireya is younger than me by a year. As Tsireya and I swim around on our ilus, we race, play hide-seek, and overall have a great day.
Until we see five large shadows fly over us, precisely as we look at each other in confusion, the village horn sounds, being so loud that we can feel it under the water.' Come!' Tsireya signs as she speeds towards the shore. I let out a watery giggle and quickly sped after her. By the time I reach the shallow part and dive into the water. I start to walk out of the water while I move my hair out of my face and quickly strain it. Then I see them. The family of dark blue navi, two boys, one looking to be about my age the other no older than Tsireya, a girl also about Tsireya's age, a small girl holding onto what I presume to be her father's neck, and next to him: his mate. I walk up to the group to see my siblings and Roxto behind the group. "Is that supposed to be a tail?" Ao'nung pokes fun at the boy's tails. Tsireya slaps his hand away and tells him to stop.
I walk up fully, making eye contact with the oldest boy. He gives me the 'I see you're greeting, his brother follows in his actions, and I smile as I look into his yellow eyes. I bring my hand up to my forehead, putting two fingers against it, and then bringing my hand down, giving them the same greeting they gave me. I walk to the back with my siblings and flick my brother's forehead. He gives me a 'What!?' Look, and I roll my eyes. We all see our father emerge from the crowd, meaning our mother was not so far behind. Ao'nung rushes over to stand behind our father. Rotxo follows suit. Tsireya and I walk much slower than them, the youngest boy not breaking any eye contact with my sister. "Hey~," he muses, causing her and me to let out little giggles.
We reach the front next to our older brother, I rest my arm on his shoulder. "Toruk Makto, to what do we owe the pleaser?" My eyes widen 'Toruk Makto? The one to bring the clans to victory in that war years ago? Jakesully?' I think 'We Seek Uturu,' he announces. "Uturu!" my mother says as more of a yell than a question."We are reef people. You are forest people, your skills will not be of use here, " Father points out."I need a safe place for my family to stay, " Jakesully pleads. "We will learn your ways. Right?" He asks, looking at his mate "Yes" she says. Mother signals for me to follow as she starts to walk around the family. I know why she wanted me to follow her, it's for training to be tsahik, even if my brother mates with someone, it's for the village, so we have the chief tsahik and an additional tsahik. I walk around slowly with Mother as she inspects their bodies. "Their arms are thin," She says as she lifts the little girl's arm. "Mom.." she mumbles, scared. Her mother moves her behind herself and hands her to Toruk Makto."Their tails..." She picks up the older girl's tail and slightly tugs at it."Ow!" the girl exclaims snatching her tail back "Are weak, they will be slow in the water" Mother exclaims I walk over to the boys inspecting their bodies moving the older ones arm up slightly, ducking under it to see his cummerbund and his dark markings. I look up into his eyes to see him already looking at me. "These children are not even true Na'vi!" My head snaps to my mother as she holds their girls' hands up "Yes we are!" the girl exclaims
Mother walks over to the younger boy and grabs his hands, holding them up. "They have demon blood!" she spreads his fingers to reveal four fingers. I look at the other boy and grab his hands. "Mother," I say as I show his three fingers to her. She looks confused but continues. "Hey! Look, look!" Jakesully says as he holds up his hands."I was born of the sky people, You can change, adapt, we will adapt." he says, Mother does not look impressed. "My husband was, Toruk Makto," His mate says as she walks up. "He led the clans to victory against the sky people." She and Mother start to get into a standoff. I know if I don't do something, anything could happen. "You call this victory? Hiding amongst strangers?" The woman looks down in shame. "It seems Eywa has turned her back on you." As soon as mother says that jakesullys spouse hisses at my mother, to which she returned it.
"Ma..." I say, pulling my mother away from the woman."I apologize for my mate.. she is very tired and we've traveled a long way." His mate looks offended at this and tries to get a word in, but he won't let her. Both she and my mother sigh heavily as they both let it go. Mother drags me back to Ao'nung and Tsireya. Father walks up to Jakesully. "Toruk Makto is a great war leader. All of us know his story. But we Metkayina.. we are not at war. We can not let you bring your war here." Father says. I felt bad for the family, they are so young and they just need a place to stay. "I'm done with war, I just need my family safe." My parents look at each other as the family prepares to be turned away, "Uturu has been asked." The mother says in a stern yet sad voice
Father moves in front of Mom and sighs, Mother looks at him, and neither of them needs to say a word to know what the other is trying to say. Mom gives a slight nod. "Toruk Makto and his family will stay with us," Father announces, "Treat them as our brothers and sisters. They do not know the sea. So they will be like babies. Teach them our ways so they do not suffer the shame of being useless." Jake sully smiles "Alright what do we say?" he asks his family who all respond with their own 'thank you no matter how quiet
"My son Ao'nung, our daughters Tsireya and Noi'tey, will show your children our ways." Ao'nung shoots up at this "Father why do..." He tries to fight, but Father cuts him off."It is decided!" He groans. Tsireya and I smile at each other and walk to the family. "Come. I will show you our village."
I grab some bags, and so does my sister as we walk on the bouncy net path. I turn around to see the youngest child bouncing on the path. It was incredibly adorable, "This way," I call out, leading them to the large pod. The ilus trilling as we walk past. We reach the Marui and allow to family to see it "This is yours." Tsireya says. The mother's face drops rigidly as she drops the rug she is carrying. "Yeah, this is great, thank you!" Jake Sully says as he turns around. Tsireya and I set down the bags. "If you need anything, and I mean anything at all, just find me or my siblings," I say as both Tsireya and I walk to our marui.
