The type of gemstone and its location is one of the most basic things to think about for your Gem.
To decide your gem, you can simply look up gemstones on Google and look through lists and decide which one you'd like to have for your OC.
Gemstones usually have a thing called chakra, and says things like 'This gem is a ____ chakra'. Whatever goes in the blank is based on the part of the body, so consider having the gem located on where its chakra location is. Gems can go just about anywhere, so get creative however you like with where you place the gem!
