"You're here." Taeko said, "Who's this?" She asked, looking over at Ayato with a polite smile.

Though through subtle indication, he wasn't lying when he said he got nervous around her. It was faint, but (Y/n)'s gaze landed on a blush that found itself on Ayato's face. She could only tell because they were right next to each other, so she knew that he was lucky enough that Taeko wouldn't be able to notice it.

"I'm Ayato Aishi, I'm in the same year as (Y/n). Pleasure to meet you, Senpai. (Y/n)'s spoken about you before, and I'd been eager to have conversations with you ever since."

(Y/n) noticed that he began using her first name in front of Taeko, which made sense. She wasn't sure what he was worried about when she heard him speak. He was nervous, but he was exceptionally good with speaking and not coming across as anxious to people who saw him as a stranger.

"Pleasure to meet you too. Oh, you must be the friend that (Y/n) met while reading a book that I read." Taeko was now intrigued.

"Oh, yes, that would be me then." He lied perfectly, "Honestly, I was rather shocked when I heard that you ended up liking the same author I love. We should recommend each other books sometime soon."

It was good that (Y/n) forced him to read up on Taeko's book genres a little more than he already had, because it would've prepared him more in case a question popped up that was specific to them.

They continued to speak, and (Y/n) didn't want to interject because of how well it was going. She turned to walk away, as she remembered she had a few assignments due tomorrow, and it was better to work on some of it instead of being bombarded with the workload after school.

She took a step away, before she was abruptly stopped by Ayato's hand grabbing onto hers and pulling her back into position. Taeko didn't mention anything, so (Y/n) assumed she didn't notice.

It was annoying, to say the least, that he'd have her there even though she had better things to do. They spoke more, and it seemed as though they got along well enough.

Taeko noticed that (Y/n) was very quiet, so she decided to tell her that her childhood friend was going to start walking with her to school more often.

"Oh," (Y/n) responded, that childhood friend. Osano Najimi was the one she referred to. He was quite the character, not someone (Y/n) particularly liked but she never spoke about because she didn't want to create a rift between him and Taeko. But now, it seemed as though a rift was necessary.

It was obvious, to everyone other than Taeko, that Osano had feelings for her, which he always swept under the rug by being unnecessarily snide towards her, and pushing her away. Yet, Taeko remained kind and considerate because she was aware of the sweet gestures he would do for her to make up for his remarks, and because he was a beloved long-time friend.

(Y/n)'s relationship with Najimi was comparable to an acquaintanceship, mainly due to the two not encountering each other enough, and because they usually weren't on the same wavelength as each other. From what (Y/n) figured out from Taeko's innocent remarks, it seemed as though he was trying to make advances towards her that were enough to make himself more significant in her life, yet not too much so that she wouldn't figure out he was outright flirting with her.

She didn't even have to look at Ayato. Ayato stood behind her ever since she began speaking to Taeko, and she felt his gaze burn into her back ever since Taeko mentioned Osano's name. She wasn't sure if Ayato already knew of him, or if this was his first time. If it was the latter, the implications behind his gaze would be much more sinister.

"Well, it was nice meeting you, Senpai, but I have something important that I need to tend to. I hope to talk to you again soon. Also, (Y/n)," His eyes met hers, and she knew what he was thinking, "I'll text you later." He gave a 'sweet' smile and waved, as he walked off to which Taeko waved back.

She had a sinking feeling descend into her stomach.

"So, what was that all about?" Taeko grinned cheekily.

"What was what about?"

"I saw something happen between the two of you. He held your hand quite tightly. Are you two perhaps...?"

"No." She responded in a deadpanned tone. "I mean, he just prevented me from falling because he saw me almost trip over." She lied, trying to level out the abnormal bluntness she let out a few seconds ago.

Even though Taeko was joking, she couldn't risk the slightest implication passing through, because if it somehow managed to blossom into something greater — Taeko actually assuming that something went on between them — Well, Ayato's wrath was something she didn't want to have to face.

Later, she got the text she dreadfully anticipated from him. It was a simple order, for her to meet him in his house in the evening. He sent her his address, and expected her to be there.

She didn't particularly want to go, but there she was, standing at his front door. The house looked well-kept and organised from the outside, the grass on the front garden cleanly cut, with rose bushes neatly rested on the borders of the house walls.

The house seemed spacious from the outside, but not noticeably so. It was as though the people living in it were decently wealthy, but weren't trying to attract the attention that immense wealth brought with it.

(Y/n) exhaled and slowly knocked on the door. She wasn't sure of what she was getting herself into, and she had no means of escaping if something went wrong. A moment later, the door opened, and Ayato looked at her briefly, to which she responded with a quiet 'hey', before wordlessly moving to give her space to walk in. She did so, and he closed the door behind her.

He walked to a direction of the house and she followed, until they were at what she assumed was the living room. They gestured for her to sit, and she did.

"What are we doing about Najimi?"
