Three Years Later

It's been three years since the incident in Michigan and since then I have learned to lead a normal human life in Tampa. I guess it won't come to any surprise that I haven't shifted into my wolf for three years either. My wolf lays dormant inside of me and I occasionally hear her soft purr that assures me that she's still alive, deep down somewhere.

When I was fifteen on the verge of sixteen, I moved to Tampa, Florida due to concerns about my safety regarding the Mark from Dakota.

My mother and father insisted on joining the no-shift bandwagon to 'support' me even after I told them it was okay for them to leave every weekend to stretch their forms. But ever since we moved here, they haven't shifted even once, so their human bodies age has finally caught up to them. I guess that's another good perk to being a Lycan; forever young as long as you shift occasionally.

All ties from our old pack were cut off two years ago, since my mother and father decided to hop on the no-shift bandwagon, and I haven't heard anything from Adam since that day.

You could say I've lead a pretty normal life ever since then.

"What do you want to do for your twentieth birthday?" My mom asks me from the other side of the kitchen.

"I don't know, I think me, Courtney, Aslim, and Philip are going to the beach or an amusement park of some kind." I reply as I play with the toothpick shaker on the island. "It's not like it's twenty-one or anything — yet!"

My mom finishes the dishes and then leans back against the counter, "Do you guys want cake and ice cream?"

I set my elbow on the island counter and lay my chin on my hand, "Mom, how old am I?"

My mom laughs and then crosses her arms, "Okay, okay! No cake and ice cream, I get it. You're getting older. Cake isn't good enough for you anymore."

I laugh and lean back on the stool, "It's not because I'm too good for cake, you know I just don't have a very big sweet tooth."

"I know, I think the last time I bought you cake and ice cream for your birthday was when you were eleven. Oh the good ol' times." She smiles her white teeth at me.

"Mom! Stop it!" I yell as I pick up the stool cushion beside me and pretend to throw it at her. "Whatever! I'm going to the mall with Aslim."

I put the cushion back on the stool and grab my car keys from the key hook, then my purse from the back of the dining room chair.

"Have fun!" She yells from the kitchen.

"I will!" I yell back with a smile on my lips.

I get in my car and immediately hook my phone up to the radio so I can listen to something other than Today's Hits on repeat. Aslim calls me and I answer, "You're at home right?"

"No I'm at the mall waiting for you." She replies, her voice amplified by the speakers. "Have you left yet?"

"I'm leaving right now, I'll see you in ten minutes tops."

"Ight!" She yells before hanging up.

I turn my playlist on and then pull out of the driveway. When I get to the mall I find a parking space a couple yards from the mall entrance and park. Aslim immediately runs to my car, having saw me pull in and yells, "Yo! What took you so long?"

"Sorry Az, I was talking to my mom." I say as I get out of the car and locked the doors.

"Oh, what did she want?" She asks as we walk across the road and enter the mall.

"She asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday." I say as I'm relieved from heat the moment we step through the doors; thanks to the blast of cold air from the AC above us in the airlock threshold. "I told her that we're probably going to go to some amusement park."

"Sounds great to me. Hey, let's go to Spencer's — and also — I want Taco Bell later, I've been craving it." Aslim says as she grabs my hand and pulls me along with her.

We enter Spencer's and the first thing I do is turn to the shirts at my left. I've been wanting this Pink Floyd shirt for awhile and I was pretty set on finally buying it. Az follows and inspects the shirts for a little bit until I find a small.

"I really need some new tunnels or plugs but I've been thinking of stretching up to an inch lately." She says as we make our way over to the jewelry cases.

"Do they have kits here?" I ask as I inspect the spiral tapers.

"Sadly, no. I'll probably have to order online again." She replies as she squats down, her eyes set on a pair of false diamond tunnels.

"Oh that sucks."

I turn to the hats and sort through them to see if any peaked my interest, but found none that really grabbed my attention. "Are you ready to go?" I ask as I walk towards the cash register. Aslim spins the jewelry case again before turning to me and nodding her head. "Are you not getting anything?" I say as I set my Pink Floyd shirt down on the counter. "Nah, no money."

"That's twenty-three forty-two." The woman says as she takes the twenty-five dollars I had already pulled out of my purse, from my hand. "And here's your change," she says as she places it in my palm, pushing my bag towards me. "Have a nice day."

"You too." I say as I take my bag, shove my change into my wallet, and walk out of the store with Aslim. "Anywhere else you want to go?" I ask.

"Taco Bell." She says as she flashes me a smile.

I raise my eyebrows at her, "And how do you plan on paying for Taco Bell with no money?"

"I have my good looks." She says to me as she tosses her hair behind her shoulder and waves to some random girls walking past us.

"But what if the person at the register is a guy?" I laugh at her. "You're a hardcore lesbian."

"Well that's where you come in." She winks at me.

I smile and playfully punch her in the shoulder, "I don't think so!"

She rubs her shoulder and winces as if I'd hit her with all my strength. "Lynn, that hurts." She fake whines.

"Oh shut up," I say as we get in line at Taco Bell. "Now what do you want?"

Aslim smiles at me mischievously, "And this is where I spend all your money."

We order our food and find an empty table on the right side of the food court where we set our treys down and start unwrapping our tacos. I take a bite out of my food when the hair on the back of my neck stands up and a cold chill runs down my spine. "Cold?" Aslim asks me with her mouth full. I swallow and hug myself for warmth, rubbing my arms.

"I don't know, yeah I guess."

I sit back in my chair further and casually look around. My body wouldn't react like this without a reason. Someone is here, and it's someone I know. I shiver again and then the smell hits me; the smell of Lycan. I lean forward again and take another bite from my taco, trying to act normal. I haven't smelt such a strong wolf smell in three years. Such a familiar wolf smell at that, and I mean there's hardly any Lycan in Tampa, let alone anyone that gives off this one.

"What's wrong?" Aslim asks as she waves her hand in front of my face.

"What?" I reply, pulled out of my thoughts. "Nothing."

"You're acting out of it." She says as she unwraps another taco.

"I'm sorry."

I try to fix myself on food but as each second goes by the smell gets stronger and the cold chills intensify. What's going on?

Something taps me on the shoulder and I turn around only to be hit with the source of the scent. He was tall and toned with flaming red hair and bright blue eyes the color of the ocean.

He was...

Adam.
