speak now or forever hold your peace

(i think you can put two and two together about this from just the title alone..)

April Kepner was getting married.

Was Lexie Grey too happy about this? Not at all.

She sat in her seat, arms folded over her purple dress as she looked at who was sitting in her row.

Jackson was sitting with Stephanie, his arm around her shoulders, and Alex was sitting with Jo. They were whispering and laughing about something. She could even hear Mark a row behind her speaking to Julia in a low voice.

Lexie held everything back in her, not to roll her eyes. Not to scoff, not to seem in any way as done as she was right that second.

April was actually getting married.. To Matthew?

She barely knew the guy. They'd only been engaged like a month or something ..

She didn't think she'd even be invited to the wedding.. After everything that had happened between herself and April through the last year.

After April had come back to Seattle, when she got her job back, they'd kissed. It was by accident.. Completely by accident, more as a way to say, "Hey, I missed you.. I'm glad you're back.."

The weeks after had caused some emotional torture.. That's for sure. April wouldn't admit it, but they'd slept together twice. Lexie was starting to think April was embarrassed of her.

Really, she was struggling to come to terms with A) her sexuality and B) her faith.

Lexie didn't mind as much at the start, but it wasn't until she'd started having some.. intense feelings that she really started to feel the burn.

It carried on for weeks until Lexie called it quits because she couldn't take it anymore. She'd definitely said some things that she regrets now..

Then April met Matthew, a paramedic.. and weeks later, he proposed to her.

They made a whole song and dance of it too. It made Lexie want to throw. up.

So she ignored April for days at a time unless she absolutely had to talk to her about something work related.

Then the storm happened, and Lexie had been stupid enough to run out into a burning and exploding bus to save a little girl, she knew it was stupid (and borderline suicidal) but at that point, she didn't care..

But she'd never forget the blood curdling scream that came from April as she watched Lexie run into that fire.

And it really would've been a shame if she had died that day..

And as she had her burns treated, she listened to April go on and on about how reckless she'd been.. but Lexie was just thinking about how much she wanted to kiss her again..

And later, after everything had cooled down (no pun intended), April had come back in, told Lexie she was sorry, sorry for everything, and that she wanted her.

"I want you, Lexie.. I want you.."

"April -"

"I haven't been fair to you, I know.. but I- I've really hurt you.."

"You're getting married -"

"When that bus exploded.. and I - Thought you were gone.. Then.."

She'd broken into sobs,

"April.. You're getting married..'

April had gone quiet before making direct eye contact with her, still heaving.

"Unless you can give me a reason not to.."

And Lexie had thought about that every day since then.

So here she sat, at her friend, sometimes lover's wedding.. miserable.. because maybe, just maybe, she could've given her a good enough reason not to marry Matthew.

Everyone started to liven up as the familiar wedding instrumental played, the guests all standing up as the maids of honour started walking in, Meredith, Arizona, and Cristina.

Meredith gave Lexie a sympathetic look as she passed her. She'd told her sister everything while she held her nephew for the first time, and Meredith had no choice but to listen as she was bedridden.

Lexie felt like she wanted to melt right back into her seat as April walked out, arm in arm with her father.

She looked beautiful. She always did, but this was something Lexie never thought she'd see with her own eyes, like she was dreaming.

She made brief eye contact with April as she walked down the aisle, instantly looking away. Her eyes darted to anything else in that moment.

Eventually, the torturous, long walk up the aisle was over, and April had joined hands with Matthew.

Everyone had sat down, Lexie felt slightly woozy from the intensity of it all, but she sat down just fine.

She completely blocked out whatever the officiant was saying. She only had eyes for April at that moment.

"April and Matthew's closest friends and family are here to bear witness to their union. Will you promise to love and support their marriage? In all the days to come? If so, please respond. 'We will' -"

Lexie watched as everyone repeated after that. She kept her mouth shut tight. She couldn't help but let the voices ring in her head and start listening to them.

She slowly started to stand up, not even noticing half the eyes on her. She was just looking at April.

As soon as she made it into the middle of the aisle, she suddenly realised what she was doing, meeting eye contact with both bride, groom, officiant, and everyone else in the damn barn.

She blushed, shook her head and sat right back down, and waited for everything to go back to normal.

She could feel the eyes burning into her soul, and she regretted it..

For about five seconds..

As soon as everything began to settle again, she stood up once more because she knew better than anyone that you had to tell someone when you loved them.

"April.. I love you."

All the eyes were on her now. She even met Matthew's glare, but she couldn't care less right now.

April looked stunned, again.

"I- I love you.. I really do.. I've been thinking about what you said and.. I really think we had something.. have. Have something special.."

She cut herself off.

"I think you're beautiful - I can't quite find all the words to use, but I love you.. April.. You can't - I just want you. With me.."

April's pupils had dilated to about 5 times their size.

"I just really hope that.. That you feel the same and if not then.."

She looked around at everyone, gritting her teeth.

"I hope we can laugh about this?"

Silence. Then April gasped.

One thing led to another.. And before they knew it, they were legging it out of the barn.

Hand in hand, April couldn't believe what she was doing, but something about it felt right..

They ran to Lexie's old beat-up car, sat in, and then just kissed. They kissed each other like they'd never kissed before.

And as soon as they pulled away, Lexie looked at April, who was still recovering from the shock of it all.

"Drive the car.. Lexie.. Just drive the car.."

So she did.
