Mercy stood frozen in thought, staring down at her mask.

Suddenly, she heard rustling in the bushes to the side of her, she instinctively tried to put her mask back on, but that was when she saw Cloud, her best friend. She didn't need to worry about anything–Cloud had seen her face many times before.

Cloud spotted her. Mercy! The words appeared over her head as a little sound came out of her, her sword in her other hand–as always, but the only thing wrong was that Cloud was acting off, like something was happening that Mercy didn't know of.

"Hey Cloud." Mercy said, turning to face her.

Cloud ran up to her in a rush. Haven't you heard?!

"Heard what?" Mercy raised an eyebrow calmly, bewildered about what she could be missing.

Hangman–he's on a rampage! He's been given the role of executor and he chose to kill me! Even though Mercy couldn't hear her actual voice–for it was replaced with little sounds and ticks, she could tell Cloud's voice was distressed and frantic.

I don't know where he is, but you need to help me! Please, we don't have much time! Cloud's grip tightened on her sword.

"What?!" Mercy's eyes widened, "Where did you last see him?"

I... don't remember. Maybe somewhere near the meeting house. He started chasing me but I think I lost him, but he could be here any second now! Before Mercy could answer, Cloud grabbed her hand and ran with her into the forest where they wouldn't be seen. Mercy's mask fell out of her hands and onto the grass where she once stood.

But as they got to the forest, they heard leaves being cut and pushed away far ahead of them, as Mercy opened her mouth to either speak or gasp, she noticed it was the one and only Hangman–who was looking for blood. He looked towards the two, his blank, pitch black face reflecting off of the darkness of the forest. He held a dagger in his hand–even worse–it wasn't his dagger, it was Caroline's. How did he get that from her?

Mercy tried to warn Cloud, who was looking behind her, not knowing her biggest fear was only yards away.

She shook Cloud's arm frantically to get her to notice so they could run, but as soon as Cloud suddenly looked back, the dagger was already flying towards them at full speed–

–before it hit squarely into Cloud's right eye.

Mercy's life flashed before her eyes.

Everything she lived for,

Everything that was she felt like she had to protect,

Everything she had a purpose for,

Was gone, right before her empty eyes.

"Cloud!" Mercy screamed and reached out for her, she dropped to her knees and held Cloud's dying body in her arms. She gasped as she saw where the blade hit. Now half of Cloud's face was covered in dark red blood as her other eye stared back at her with the last of her life in it.

Mercy. Cloud said, the words glitching violently above her head as a now distorted sound came with it, like a dismantled robot, I'm sorry, I tried to warn you.

"No-" Mercy objected. "Don't die, Cloud, don't die!" She shook her by the shoulders viciously, trying to stop Cloud from losing consciousness.
