***Trigger Warning***
Jeremiah has done more than his fair share of frustrating, awful things but this has to take the cake. He couldn't possibly be confessing to Roger's murder...could he? I mean, I've suspected him all along, but for him to be so open about it was sickening. I needed an actual confession.
"Your message?" I grit my teeth.
He adjusts his shirt. At least he knows his color is red flag. "Oh, come on! Don't give me that judgmental look. The man was 85 years old! How much longer do you even think he had Lyra?"
I slap him hard across the face. That one was for Roger. "He was a good man! He could've had twenty more years for all you know! It wasn't your place to dictate that." I do my best to keep my tears at bay. I had no doubt I was going to cry about this a lot when I was alone.
Jeremiah angrily rubs his face. "You have no idea who that guy even was! You knew him one night, stop acting like you were best friends!"
Bitterness coats my words. "So, you what? Killed an innocent man just to show me how tough you are? Well, let me tell you something Jeremiah, that's about the weakest thing you could've done."
He chuckles, sending chills down my spine. "No. I killed him because he owed me money. Not everything is about you."
The glare I give him is so intense he looks away. "Owed you money for what?"
"When you dumped me that become none of your business."
I square up, ready to beat him senseless if I had to. "None of my business? Really?! Did you forget that you brought me here because you were in trouble with the law? Someone wants to kill me and my entire family. I'm guessing that has something to do with the reason he owes you money. I'd say that's my business."
"You and your precious family are fine." He mocks me. "I'm sure he forgot about you by now. They only wanted you to get to me."
He wasn't going to talk, infuriating me to no end. I did the only thing left I could think of. I lied. "Okay, you don't want to tell me why you did it, that's fine by me. I don't need to know. That's the police's job. Now seems like a good time to tell you that I've been recording you this whole time. Oh, and don't even bother grabbing my phone because I've already sent it to someone. There's nothing you can do now."
The look on his face gives me satisfaction. It's clear he believes me. "Wait! Please don't do this! I'll tell you everything if you promise to keep it between us."
I wasn't one to break a promise, but this is Jeremiah we're talking about. If anyone deserves someone breaking their promise, it's him. "I promise I won't tell if you tell me the truth. Are you in the mafia or what?"
He ignores my question and poses his own. "You know how I work at a strip club?"
I don't bother to hide my annoyance. "Yes. It's literally your entire personality."
