I pulled out my suitcase from the car, and it thumped onto the concrete with an alarming amount of force that I thought would burst it open. I looked at the house with a mixture of excitement and disappointment. It was a cute little cottage surrounded by fauna and looked very old and ever so slightly dated. It was located in some small town in Canada in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a bunch of old canadian men sitting on rocking chairs on the front porches and women knitting and little kids with red noses trying to build snowmen with snow that's too icy to form a shape.
"Y/n, unlock the door for me, Sheila said the keys underneath the gnome figurine by the mailbox."
My mum said and I obeyed, dropping my suitcase and dutifully retrieving the key. it was old and rusty and looked like it had been under the gnome for a while.
I unlocked the door, and it creaked a lot as I forcefully pushed it open, checking for spiders. There were none, thank god, and I went to help mum with the rest of the suitcases. It was a little weird being without my older brother, but I would get used to it eventually. It's not like he was dead or anything.
"Go check out your room, babes, it's down the hallway to the right." My mum said and put the suitcases and random boxes on the kitchen table. The house was very bright inside, with barely any furniture and white linen dusty curtains. It had yellow faded wallpaper and smelled beachy but also like the end of summer, when your house is coated in grains of sand and summer reading work is still sat on the table, not done yet.
My new room was a nice size, not very big but bigger than my old one. It had a big circle window that was framed by pretty green curtains. I pictured what I would do with it...
I pushed the large mattress to rest next to the window and swept some of the dust out with a spare broom i found in a closet.
"Y/n/n! c'mere a sec!" My mum called for me. I hurried over, thinking my brother might have been calling or something.
I was wrong.
She held up a rusty red hand knitted sweater that was a little lumpy and had some loose threads. A big yellow misshapen star was featured in the middle.
"I made it for you! As a moving house surprise!" She said excitedly.
I held it and felt the warmth from the needles touching her fingers that had seeped into the fabric. I felt tears well in my eyes.
"Thanks, mum. This means a lot to me." I gave her a big hug, knowing she put a lot of effort into this meaningful gift.
"Of course, y/n/n, I love you so much and I know this move has been hard, espxially with your brother, and i'm proud of how mature you've been."
I nodded and folded the sweater in my hands.
"Can i go explore? It's pretty out." I asked.
"Mhm, yes, fall in canada is always gorgeous."
I went into my room and changed out of my clothes since I felt dirty from sitting in them in a car for 13 hours.
I changed into a pair of straight leg jeans and faded orange dunks and a long sleeved white tee, and pulled my new sweater over it. It was a cloudy october day, all the trees were orange and brown, and a mist of rain coated the air. If a song could describe it it would probably sound like Clay Pigeons by Micheal Cera. Which reminded me of my new playlist, which I quickly pulled up on my phone and attached my ear buds, the wire snaking up my arm. I set off into town, listening to Clairo and the Wallows and Mitski, my favorite artist.
I skipped to the song Nobody by Mitski and watched the rufescent trees slowly pass me by. I didn't really know where I was going but it didn't matter much. There were few houses and when there were they were all old and run down. I looked up from my music for a moment and realized I was on a deserted street vacant of houses. The light was moody from the crowd of tall maple trees above me, and the light filtered down red and brown. It would have been quite beautiful if I wasn't nervous about being lost.
