"Pass the salt!"
"Where is it?"
"Brown box number 4."
"Got it!"
me and my mum had been baking all day, and slowly unpacking while doing so.
The moving truck carrying in the remainder of our possessions arrived early that morning and Caleb offered to help. He had somehow gotten my number last night even though I hadn't given it to anyone. When I asked he just sent me 'detective gadget... doo doo doo doo doooo!!!' and I didn't question further.
"Ok, banana bread #4 is in the oven and baking. What's next?"
"The chocolate chip cookies." I checked the list scribbled on the back of a bill.
"righto." She dried the bowl and poured some flour in it.
"That's the last one, Mrs. y/l/n!" Caleb smiled as he put the last box in the room.
"Ms. y/l/n." Mum correctly sweetly. "And thank you, Caleb, you're the sweetest. How much do I owe you?"
"oh, it's for free mrs- ms y/l/n. But if you insist I will try one of those cookies..."
I threw him one and he caught it in his mouth, winking at me as he bowed dramatically.
"Do you wanna hang out later, y/n?" He asks as he chomps down on the cookie.
"errrrr...." I looked at my mum to see if I could hang out later.
"I have an interview today at the grocery store later so it would be awesome if you had someone to hang out with!" She smiled enthusiastically.
"My mum has an interview today at the grocery store later so it would be awesome if I had someone to hang out with!" I parroted and my mum and Caleb laughed.
"cool. We can walk around town and check out the halloween stores and stuff." He said reaching for another cookie which I absentmindedly pushed closer.
"Fun! We'll just finish baking these and taking them out of the oven and then we can get going." I rolled out the cookie dough and started cutting it up into shapes of pumpkins.
"Want some help?" Caleb offered.
"Sure!" I agreed and he washed his hands and stood beside me, elbow to elbow, cutting halloween shapes in the cookie dough.
"Right, that's the last set, I have to run so I'm not late, clean all this up for me please?" My mum said as she shrugged on her coat and ran out the door.
"Well, are you ready?" Caleb grinned as he wiped some flour off his face. "Here, you have some too." He reached out his hand and wiped some of the flour off my cheek with his thumb.
"Thanks." I ignored any butterflies in my stomach and went into my room to grab some socks. My phone was buzzing like crazy. I picked it up and saw 6 missed calls from my brother and a buttload of texts from him as well.
"Oh, Caleb, two secs, my brothers calling." I called out for Caleb.
I returned the call and waited for him to answer.
"hullo?"
"Marcus! Hey! Is everything ok? you called and texted a bunch."
"oh. yeah. Everything's fine. You just weren't answering."
"oh. Um, how's it going? How's dad?" I asked the last part stiffly.
"He's good. We're good."
We're? I thought angrily. "Um, cool. We got to Canada. It's so pretty here."
