Attention (Shawn Hunter x reader)

Pt 18

I stared at Cory completely dumbfounded. His girlfriend? Since when did Cory Matthews have a girlfriend?

"What do you mean girlfriend?" Shawn voiced my confusion.

Cory turned to him and spoke like he was talking to a toddler "My girlfriend. As in a girl that I'm dating."

"He knows what it means" I interrupted annoyed at Cory for acting like Shawn's stupid. "Who is it?"

Just as Cory opened his mouth to reply the homeroom bell rang and Mr Turner started talking. Cory smirked knowing we would have to sit in confusion until the end of the period. I turned around crossing my arms and not so patiently waited for class to end. When the bell finally rang I shit out of my seat and followed Cory out of the classroom.

"Who's your girlfriend?" I asked a bit too aggressively.

"Why didn't you tell me you had one?" Shawn asked.

"Why do you guys care? It's not exactly like we've been on speaking terms" Cory said without looking at us.

"It was just a stupid fight" I groaned.

"That doesn't mean I stopped caring about you" Shawn said clearly disturbed by the sudden secrets between him and his best friend. I gave him a sympathetic glance, but didn't know how I could help. I can't even imagine what he must be feeling right now.

"Yeah you made that real clear Shawn" Cory said turning a corner.

"Where are you going?" I asked when I realized we were down an unfamiliar hallway.

"I told you. I'm meeting my girlfriend" Cory said, still refusing to look at us.

I rolled my eyes at his avoidant language, but my annoyance quickly became fear when I figured out who he was walking to. I gripped Shawn's arm praying that I was wrong.

"Hey are you okay?" Shawn asked looking at my state of panic. Clearly he hadn't seen her yet. I slowly raised my arm to point at her bringing his gaze to the other side of the hallway where Cory stood. He was kissing Becky.

For a split second Shawn's face went a ghostly shade of white, but it was quickly replaced by a furious red. He began storming over to them but I grabbed him before he could get to far.

"Shawn stop!" I said yanking his arm back in an attempt to prevent his attack.

"Why? He's dating the girl that tried to ruin your life!" Every word he said seemed to fuel his rage.

"How would Cory know that?" I asked. "We never told him she was lying." As far as Cory knows Becky is just one of Shawn's many rejects. My words seemed to calm Shawn down if only for the moment.

"I'm not convinced he's that innocent" he said after a few deep breaths.

"Oh no the bastard is definitely up to something" I concurred. "But like you said with Becky: if we get mad they win. I'll talk to him about it later" I was still trying to prevent a confrontation. Shawn let out a disgruntled sigh, but stopped trying to attack Cory. I considered that a win.

After school I rushed home trying to beat Cory, but somehow he made it there before me. I slowed my pace when I saw him through the window and tried my best to casually walk into the kitchen.

"Hey" I said walking over to the fridge. I didn't really want anything I just needed a reason to stay. Cory barely glanced up at me before weakly raising one hand in a wave.  "So... Becky... weird choice in girlfriend."

"Yeah" Cory said not quite processing my words. "I- I mean no! She's- ya know- she's great"

"Very convincing" I grabbed an apple and sat next to him "You should be an actor."

"Shut up" he said looking like he wanted to punch me a little to much.

"Okay. I'm sorry. How did you guys start dating?"

"Well I'm mad at Shawn. She's mad at Shawn..." He trailed off leaving me to connect the dots.

"You're dating someone because you got in a fight with your friend?!" I was completely baffled. This had gone way to far.

"Well yeah! You started dating and didn't talk to me about it, ask me about it, or even tell me it happened! Did you know I had to find out from Topanga?" He kept out of his char to yell at me. I shrank back in my seat at every accusation. They were all true, but it's not like we could've told him someone would spread a rumor about us.

"Yeah but-" I stopped remembering my promise to Shawn.

"But nothing. You have nothing to say. Becky was so right about you. She said you'd claim that who you're dating doesn't matter but the second you find out about me and her you get pissed. What a hypocrite" at the mention of Becky all of my guilt faded. This wasn't Cory talking. He might be mad but he'd never hurt Shawn like this. Becky was manipulating him. I couldn't hold back anymore and shot out of my chair.

"Becky is a liar! She didn't want to date you to prove a point she just did it to hurt Shawn! Just like she lied about me and Shawn dating!" The words stumbled out of my mouth before i had a chance to stop them. "Shit I mean-" I couldn't come up with a way to save myself. I'd said the truth blunt and simple.

"You're not dating Shawn?" Cory asked looking way too calm. I sank back into my seat and spoke quietly.

"We went with the lie because we thought it would make her mad. So no we're not actually dating."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"We were planning to but you blew up on Shawn before he got the chance and after that he just... didn't. I'm sorry Cor"

"Yeah well sorry's not gonna cut it. I thought you guys weren't telling me because you thoughts is disapprove but instead you just flat out lied. I'm not forgiving you. Or Shawn" Cory said and stormed upstairs.
