The sound of pouring rain and the faint smell of cigarettes filled your senses. You couldn't stand that smell. However, it seemed your mother paid no mind. She saw no harm in smoking an entire pack of cigarettes with her children in the car.Your little brother was sound asleep in the backseat, holding a small action figure of his favorite superhero. You couldn't help but smile knowing he was able to get some sleep. It's been hard to get any sleep ever since your father passed 6 months ago. You weren't very close with him as he wasn't quite present in the family, always wasting his life to drugs and alcohol. He never really had anything nice to say to you, let alone anyone else. Pushing away the ones he loved was the worst mistake he could have made.
Your mother let out a small groan before saying, "We're almost here. Get ready to wake Liam up in about 10 minutes. And don't forget to be nice to your family y/n. We can't have a repeat of last time." You rolled your eyes and mumbled a small "okay" before continuing to stare out the window. The rain at this time of night always made you feel at ease. Sounds of water droplets hitting the car could be heard all around you.
drip... drop...
A wave of exhaustion washed over you as you felt your eyes begin to droop. You were practically forcing yourself to stay awake. You haven't felt this calm in a while. Unfortunately, there was no time to rest as you could see small lights in the distance. This must be your aunt's house. You began to grab your things to prepare for your stay. Mother was dropping you and Liam off tonight with Aunt Tina so she could go take care of "unfinished business" she had. She didn't exactly specify to either of you what this meant, but you assumed it was important.
Sounds of rubble could be heard from underneath the tires as she pulled into the driveway. Everyone inside must have still been awake considering how every light was still on outside. Aunt Tina swung open the door and ran to the car with an umbrella.
"Why hello my little love-bug!! Quick, quick it's raining pretty hard! Here, let me help you grab that," she exclaimed as she grabbed a few bags. "Take this umbrella y/n, I can get your brother just hurry inside! It's coming down pretty bad."
You scurried off into the house, dripping wet from head to toe. Unloading the rest of your things onto the couch, you noticed your uncle Rob sitting alone at the table eating a bowl of soup.
"Oh! Hello y/n! Good to see you, looks like you've grown a lot." he said as he took another spoonful.
"Hey uncle Rob, good to see you too. What kind of soup you eating?" you asked in response. You didn't really have much interest in what soup he was eating, but he seemed like he wanted some conversation.
"Haha, nothing but some good ol' chicken soup. Been feeling under the weather so your aunt whipped me up a bowl. Want any? I imagine you're probably hungry after your long trip." he smiled softly.
"No thanks, Liam may want some if he's not still tired. I'm going to go head up to the spare room. Thanks for the offer, though!" you said before running upstairs. You weren't exactly in a hurry, but you felt the need to lay in the comfort of a nice bed.
Once everyone was inside, you could hear chatter amongst Aunt Tina and Uncle Rob. Liam seemed to be passed out on the mattress aside from you. You heard a slight knock on the door before your mom entered the room.
"I'm off. Make sure you listen to your aunt and uncle please. Don't stir up trouble while I'm gone. I'll be back soon. I love you both so much." she said as she held onto the door handle. You stared at the ground a little before saying, "I don't understand why you're doing this, but I hope you'll be back soon. Liam needs you. I can't babysit him any longer. I'm going to be busy when college starts, and I can't take care of a kid at the same time. I hope you know what you're doing, we love you too. Just stay safe in the rain please." She sighed and planted a kiss on your forehead, "I know, trust me I know y/n. I hate to burden you with him, but I promise this is the last time you will have to worry about it." She kissed Liam on the cheek before making her way back to the door. "I'll be back for you." she said as she shut the door.
Those happened to be the last words you ever heard from her.
