Scandinavian Corporate is how I would describe the decor for this building. Open spacing, minimalist detailing, abstract angles, the lobby is about three stories high, filled with light from the grand multi-story windows facing the street. A balcony with a glass railing overlooks the main entrance from the second story.
Underneath that balcony are gates with an electronic reader, and I see employees swipe a card over the surface, to make the gates open for them. A guard sits at a large desk to the right of the main doors, watching us enter, keeping tabs on those who attempt to pass through the gates. On the left I see a small cafe inside the lobby, and a seating area.
The Overlord is watching me take in my surroundings, as is the guard.
"Go ahead, walk through the gate" the Overlord prompts, leading me towards the electronic reader.
The guard springs up out of his chair and comes toward us. I glance at him, give him a little wave, waiting for the Overlord to say something.
"Director Holden" the guard exclaims, recognizing the Overlord as he gets closer to us. He pauses, and looks at us both uncertainly.
"Watch this" the Overlord says to the guard, then turns to me and shoos me towards the gates again. "Proceed" he exhorts me.
"But I need ID" the guard interjects, quickly shushed by the Overlord.
I walk towards the gates, self-consciously aware that I am being watched. When I get two steps from the gate, it opens of its own accord. I didn't do anything to it. I take a step back, and the gate closes. I spread my arms wide to show my open hands, and take a step forward again, and the gate obediently opens once more. I turn around with a smile for the Overlord, ignoring the stupefied guard, and bow like I just performed a magic trick.
"It works, just like you said it would" I say.
"For sure, you did not doubt it" he responds wryly.
"Director..." the guard feebly protests, and the Overlord puts a hand on his shoulder.
"Anyone who can do that" the Overlord points at me with his other hand, "doesn't need to show you ID" he says to the confused guard. "Contact my secretary for more details, you will be seeing a lot of this woman in the future."
"Ja, okay..." he replies, as the Overlord walks away from him.
I allow him to enter through the gate first, and follow him to the elevator banks. As we approach, employees who are returning from lunch respectfully step aside to make way for us, murmuring greetings to the Overlord. He pushes the lower button on the brass wall plate, and when the doors open, we two are the only ones who get on the elevator, although several are waiting. It would seem we are the only ones going down.
On the interior control panel of the elevator, there are many buttons in multiple rows. The Overlord reaches for the lowest set, pointing out to me the button he will push before he pushes it. We are at street level, and so I was not expecting the elevator ride to be very long, and I am surprised when it takes several minutes.
"How deep are we going?" I ask in amazement.
"About... forty meters" he answers.
"What is that like..." I pause, trying to do the conversion math in my head.
"Thirteen floors" he intercedes.
The doors finally open to a large space, very white and clean, with artificial daylight bulbs, and several potted plants dotted about. The ceilings are high enough that it doesn't feel cramped in here. I walk forward, looking around with interest. There are some white, comfortable looking couches close by the elevator, with a little coffee table set up. Beyond them I see glass walls, completely transparent, and rows and rows of white cabinets.
