"There are three different classes of Seers," Mrs. Tallman turned to the chalkboard and wrote Class 1, Class 2, Class 3. "Can anybody tell me the differences between the classes?"
Nobody raised their hand.
"Very well then!" Mrs. Tallman exclaimed, looking a bit flustered. "Class one is the most common class, and what comes to mind when you think of a Seer. Class one Seers get both natural visions and on command visions. Their natural visions are clear and extremely vivid, while their on command visions are much more fuzzy and muddled.
Class two, which is my class, by the way, is the opposite. Whereas class one's natural visions are clear, class two's are fuzzy and difficult to understand. Their on command visions, however, are much clearer. Most class two Seers even have some control over how far into the future their visions take place."
Okay, maybe I'm class two, then, Jasmine thought.
Class three is the rarest. Class three gets their visions while they're asleep, which can make it difficult to tell what's a dream and what's a vision. Their visions, however, have the largest time range of any class, from a few days to multiple years into the future," Mrs. Tallman paused. "Any questions?" When nobody raised their hand again, she continued.
"At the end of the month, we will have our first S.O.R.T.- State Obligated Refining Tests. Don't worry, you don't have to study for it," Mrs. Tallman held up her hands when uneasy mumbles broke out among the students. "It's really just sorting you into your classes so you can get the proper education."
The mumbling stopped, but Jasmine caught a few uneasy glances being exchanged around the classroom.
"We will, however, start preparing for them next week," Mrs. Tallman adjusted her glasses. "This means we'll start learning the fun things, like controlling your visions, Seeing on command, and the not-so-fun things, like homework," a few kids groaned at this. "I know, I'm sorry. The school requires it. I would much rather spend the class teaching you other things."
Before she could add anything else, the bell rang, and the students rushed out of the room.
"Bye Mrs. Tallman!" Jasmine called on her way out. "So, what class do you guys think you'll be in?"
"Definitely not three," Zoe scrunched her nose. "Though I did know someone like that before. She had a dream her house burned down, and the next week, it did. Then her family moved somewhere else and I never saw her again."
"That's dark," Lexi shuddered. She still hadn't memorized her schedule, so she was reading it carefully and almost bumped into someone. "Sorry. Anyways, I think I'm either one or two."
"I think I'm two," Jasmine grabbed Lexi's arm and kept her from crashing into another student. "You know how Mrs. Tallman said that class two's natural visions aren't as good as their on command ones? I think since my visions are always short that I'm class two."
Zoe nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I'm probably class one. I think I fit the description pretty well."
"Oh, look, here's our English class!" Lexi pointed to the classroom on the right, still holding her schedule in her hand.
"Oh. I guess it is," Zoe mumbled. Despite what she'd said on the first day of school, she seemed reluctant to enter the class. "Bye, Jasmine."
Jasmine smiled at her friends, her grin genuine this time. After learning about the classes of Seers in Prophecy, maybe she wasn't such a failure after all.
A few days later, Jasmine got her first vision in weeks.
Her P.E. teacher, Mr. White, had taken his class outside. Mr. White, ironically, was a P.E. teacher, despite his round belly and tendency to sit in his rolling chair and eat leftover nachos from the cafeteria instead of actually teach. He was so lazy that he preferred to roll around in his chair rather than get up and walk to places, which Jasmine found rather weird for a P.E. teacher.
