Chapter 4: Shock

After the fiasco that came after Lightnings flee from the crowd of hungry fans, and after Y/N saved him, needless to say that Lightning was kind of embarrassed. The drive home was uncomfortably silent. Y/N was in the front seat and was calmly typing something on her phone. Lightning opted to instead just stare out the window and wait til he got home.

The first time the car stopped it was for Y/N. She got out of the car and bid her farewell to the limo driver and to Lightning. She apparently lived in a nice, cleaned up apartment on the top floor. Lightning didn't know why that surprised him, but seeing the home of the person that works for you reminds you that theyre human just like you.

Soon its just the limo driver and Lightning. The limo driver is a girl that's wearing your typical limo driver uniform with the hat and everything. She also seems to have a framed picture in her can, although it's hard to see you can make out a egg shaped man with a crazy mustache and grin. He's doing some sort of villainous pose that makes you wonder who it is, although he seems familiar, almost like youve seen him before in some tv show.
I also see the limo drivers phone sit idly by on the counter of the car, its bright yellow with a almost menacing text on it that says "GNOMES ARE REAL".  Before Lightning can ask about the phonecase and the framed man the limo driver abruptly stops and tells him that hes at his destination. Shaking away his questions, he gets up and out of the car. Closing the car door behind him.

Lightning gets into his penthouse without much thought and quickly makes a beeline for the couch where he immediately throws himself on. The exhaustion of the day finally catches up to him as he reorientes himself on the couch so his head is on a neat pillow. He closes his eyes and breathes in for a second, to help him recollect the events of today.

He gets interrupted- again, as Mater blindly stumbles inside his home like a newborn calf.

"Heya bud!"
He shouts enthusiastically, not even thinking of the day Lightning has had.

Lightning grumbles out a hello. He gave Mater a spare key to his house, in case he would ever need anything, Mater is his best friend and advisor, why wouldn't he have access to his home?

Mater, ignoring Lightning's obvious tiredness, flops down on the couch next to Lightning and props a pillow behind his back to support him, Mater is a pretty tall and strong fellow, all those years in that small town and carrying tires had made Mater muscular and helped him develop a stocky strong build. In another world if Lightning was attracted to men he wouldve definitely asked Mater out on a date.

Maters booming voice rings out as Lightning peeks at him from the corner of his eye.

"Soooo.....hows it goin with the new gal?"

I groan into the couch, not wanting to talk about Y/N, not after.... today.

"Everything is fine, Mater. She's perfectly fine."

I try to give a vauge enough answer in hopes of steering the conversation off to something else. It obliviously doesn't work.

"Oh come on Lightnin! She's great! Not to toot mah own horn or anythin but she seems to like me!"

I stay quiet, waiting for Mater to continue. At the last couple of words it seems as if its captivated my attention all of the sudden. She likes him. What does that mean?

"Me and her seemed to get off to a great start! I really like her! Better than Cherry even! It does help that shes also easy on the eyes!"

Mater lets out a little goofy laugh at the end of his sentence and i can see a visible blush on his face, his face isn't beet red or anything, but he's definitely become a bit pink in the face. The sight makes me annoyed for son reason, he seems to like her, and im usually all on board for Mater to pursue a romantic interest but this time i cant help but be wholly against it for some reason. The thought of Y/N and Mater together makes my stomach upset. I force out a reply to Maters statement. Hoping the conversation will end soon.

"That's.....great Mater. She seems nice enough. Although....."
I trail off, knowing Mater and how easily he's distracted, this will surely catch his attention.

Mater perks up and looks at me expectantly.
"But....what?"

I fake a grimace on my face as i look at him.
"Well....yknow..people like  Y/N...yknow...the all business types don't really strike me the types to date someone from work unfortunately."
The truth is, im kind of lying. I have to idea if Y/N would ever date someone from work, at first glance she may seem as the strict type, but from our banter to her saving me something tells me she's different.

Maters face falls slightly but quickly perks up again after a quick second.
"Oh.....but...i mean whats the harm in asking her out! If shes all business then she'll quickly get over it if she's not interested!"

I surpress a frown from appearing on my face as i drink in his words. He wants to ask her out?!
I don't know why this unpleases and annoys me so much. I should be happy that Mater is pursuing a romantic interest but...why does it have to be Y/N?

I don't reply and simply nod and give him a thumbs up, Mater smiles back and puts on some movie as he continues to lay on my couch. I lay next to him and drink in the information he set out for me. If hes going to ask ger out ill have to make sure it doesn't happen.

I try to convince myself its because i want to protect Mater from Y/N but deep down....i know why im doing this.
