Keith had gotten captured by the Empire a while ago, breaking off his bond with the red lion to keep everyone safe so they couldn't use him to find the others. This caused a shift in paladins, Lance to red and Allura to blue, and they had to relearn how to work as a team without Keith.
During a mission the team found that the base they were on had a single Druid, who simply followed them around but never attacking anyone. They all left unharmed but on almost every mission after that they all started to notice the Druid more often, especially Shiro who could almost sense the Druid.
It took the black lion telling Shiro that it was Keith for them to find out what happened to the former red paladin. After that they managed to get him out of Haggar's grasp, Shiro had to reteach Keith a lot of stuff, like how to speak and eat properly again.
Keith's body had been changed into a more galran appearance, with the fluffy ears and a thin layer of fur that more tinted his skin a light lavender color, so when he returned to his normal self he got really self conscious and worried they'd reject him because he didn't look the same and he could never act the same again. He was especially afraid that Shiro wouldn't want to still be around him because he does have a lot of trauma dealing with the Galra.
