I wasn't a person who second-guessed everything

I wasn't a person who second-guessed everything. I definitely had my moments, but overall, I was usually confident in my decisions. However, it seemed with Reuben that the confidence I once had would disappear in the blink of an eye. This time was no different.

Reuben stood in front of me. His eyes were darting around, focusing on anything that wasn't me and I could feel the confidence I previously had begin to deplete. Was this the right decision? Should I have followed him? Should I even be trying to fix our bond?

It was one thing to say it to myself, but it was another when he was standing in front of me.

Reuben's eyes shot toward a small clearing between two trees and before he could potentially decide to run away again, I held my hand out.

"Don't run away," I pleaded. "Please?" His eyes shot to mine and he bit his lip. "I just want to talk."

That's right. I wanted to talk to him, but would it make a difference in the end?

"Now's not a good time," Reuben muttered and I frowned.

"Not a good time or you just don't want to talk to me?" I challenged even though I feared the answer.

Reuben sighed. "Eli—"

"All I'm asking is for a conversation," I cut him off. "I just want to talk to you about..."

About everything. About his rejection, about Oakwood, about Fen.

Everything.

"I don't know what you're wanting me to say," Reuben admitted with a frown on his face.

"You don't have to say anything. You can just listen."

A tense silence fell over us. Reuben's eyes started to dart around again until they finally settled on me.

"Eli—" he started, but his words were quickly cut off by the sound of footsteps.

Neither one of us had the opportunity to react before the small brown wolf from the other night sped past us followed by a larger, dark blue-eyed wolf and a smaller, grey-eyed one. My eyes widened and I turned my head to face Reuben just as he shifted and took off in the direction the other wolves had gone.

Did he know them? Did he know the brown wolf?

Without thinking, I followed Reuben's lead and quickly shifted into my wolf, grabbed my clothes with my mouth, and took off as well.
