I'm sitting with the Ducks the next day, watching Jace and a few others play hockey with a yam and a cooler.

"What are they playing?" Gertie asks.

"Yam hockey," I say.

Jace scores and he grins, looking at me.

I shake my head. "Nice goal."

"Thanks."

"Last team meeting," Alex says, walking over to us. "What's up, Koob?"

"What's up? This is the last team meeting of the summer. It all ends on Sunday," Koob says.

"Speaking of which, can you sign this for me?" Maya asks, handing him what looks like a folded up white t-shirt and a marker.

"Yeah sure," Koob says, taking it and signing his name.

"Okay, thank you. Sof, can I get you?"

"Yeah," She says, taking the marker. But she's watching Jace. "Evelyn, what do you think about Jace in the showcase? He melted down last time and I just hope he's ready for all this."

I shrug. "I think he'll shine through. He's gone through rough times before but he always comes back on top. As long as you don't show your worries to him, he'll be fine."

"Yeah. Okay, just don't write all that when you sign it," Maya says, redirecting the attention to the t-shirt. "Keep it upbeat."

Sofi signs it and hands it back to Maya.

She holds it up to me. "Evelyn?"

I shrug. "Yeah, sure, I'll sign it."

Coach Cole comes out for what I'm expecting to be a big speech.

Which it kinda is but the plot twist comes when he says, "This year, I'm going to be taking a step back. Coach Alex is gonna take the helm this year. And I'm just gonna go as a dad." He looks at Jace.

There's a moment of silence and then cheering for Alex.

I look at Jace, who's smiling at his dad. The summer showcase might work out this year.

I walk with the Ducks into the building and watch them get their jerseys.

"You ready for this?" I ask Jace as they start walking towards the locker rooms. Technically, I'm not supposed to be with them but it'll be okay, because Alex is cool like that.

Jace shrugs. "As ready as I'll ever be."

"Coach T, what the hell?" I hear Alex say. I realize that we've stopped walking and the Canadian team is in front of us.

"Who is that?" Jace whispers to Sofi as Coach T starts talking to Alex.

"He coached the intense Mighty Ducks last year before we took over their name in the finals," Sofi whispers back. "We haven't heard from him since."

"Apparently he coaches in Canada now," I mutter, raising my eyebrows.

I stand quietly with the rest of them as Coach T talks. He sounds calm but his words are supposed to be angry.

"Is he on something?" Jace asks me and Sofi after we walk away from the Canadians.

Sofi looks behind her. "I'm not sure."

"He sounds like it," Jace and I say at the same time. Jace grins.

We arrive at the locker room and I stop short of the door. Jace gestures for Sofi to go in and hangs back with me.

"I better get to the stands, your dad's probably waiting," I say.

Jace raises his eyebrows. "You're sitting with my dad?"
