Prologue
=||=||="What are you doing up here again?" asked a soft woman's voice. Her question coming from a place of genuine curiosity mixed with a little concern.
"Enjoying the view," was the dry response she received.
"As lovely as it is, you have to eat dinner, Seb. I can't return my nephew all malnourished, now can I?" Laura joked in an attempt to lighten the tension that floated in the night air of Boston. After a few seconds of silence, she glanced down at Sebastian, yet he wasn't making any efforts to get up. Her hand landed on his shoulder gently, "Seb?"
"Alright," he sighed, shrugging her hand off as he hoisted himself up. He dusted off the back of his pants and headed for his balcony. Without sparing his aunt a glance, he dropped down onto the wood planks that made up his balcony. Tiny creaks released from under his feet as he walked towards his room.
"Umm, a little help please?" Laura asked before he stepped in. Sebastian turned around to see his aunt struggling to touch her foot to the floor. Sebastian shook his head and chuckled to himself as he turned to help his struggling aunt down safely.
"Thank you, now let's hurry before the food gets cold." She patted a hand on Sebastian's back as she walked past. Laura left the room first which left Sebastian alone. Before taking his leave, he reached into his pajama pockets and fished out his phone.
1 missed call from Mama💞
3 texts from Mama💞Sebastian, shocked at the sudden reach out from his mother, stared at the notification. His brother and him had been staying with their aunt throughout their high school years. His mother had always wanted them to leave the Netherlands, so as a solution, she had reached out to her sister who stayed in the US. When she had asked if the boys could stay with her for a little, Laura didn't hesitate to jump at the offer. She definitely didn't expect them to stay with her for as long as they did, but she never complained.
Laura had grown to love the boys as her own. She supplied them with clothes, food, a home, and so much more. She tried her best to make the boys feel as though their mother's love never left them. Over the years, she never failed to openly express her love to Sebastian's brother, Lucas. However, it was trickier when it came to Sebastian.
He had never asked to leave the Netherlands or his mother and be taken in. He had begged his mother to return home the first few months of living with Laura but was always denied. As Laura continued to take care of the brothers, Sebastian only made it harder on her. He only saw it as her trying to be his 2nd mother or even replace the one he already had. Thus, resulting in him running away, getting into small trouble, and staying holed up in his room. Alone.
Laura tried her best to convince him that none of that was the case, but it was hard to reason with a 15 year old boy. She spent her days trying to get him to open up or even get out the house for once. Overtime, with school and age, Sebastian sort of got used to her attempts and his new living arrangement.
"SESBASTIAN!" Laura's voice echoed from downstairs. "Hurry up!"
"Yeah, hurry up," Lucas' voice followed shortly after with a hint of annoyance. When it came to how Sebastian treated Laura, Lucas was always one to have an opinion. He hated how ungrateful his younger brother came across at times. He never hesitated to smack or pinch him whenever he did cross that line with Laura.
Lucas was older than Sebastian by almost 3 years. He had always played the big brother role back in the Netherlands which Sebastian hated at times and expressed. However, Lucas continued his act in hopes of protecting and guarding his younger brother from the horrors that slowly unfolded before them. Though busy taking care of Seb, he never missed the signs of how bad their mother was getting. Moving to the US was the best option in Lucas' eyes. Obviously, Sebastian didn't see it that way.
He slipped his phone back into his pocket with a heavy sigh before reaching for his door handle. By the time he had reached the bottom step, he had guessed they were already eating their food by the sound of utensils hitting the plate. Their laughter filled the halls as Sebastian took slow long strides towards the kitchen.
As Sebastian neared the entry way, a small whisper could be heard from inside saying, "I'm so glad I was able to take you guys away from Ms.Crazy." He stopped in his steps and stood there for what could've been no more than a few seconds. Suddenly, laughter poured from the kitchen into the hall. Seb glanced at the light beaming into the dim hallway from the entry way he stood a foot from. He stood there for about a second more before he turned around and walked back up to his room.
Yeah, he definitely didn't see it their way.
