Chapter 2
=||=||=I slipped through the door of 3rd period right as the bell rang. Seeing as people continued to talk while standing around, I darted to get a seat in the back. The only one open was by a window which was even better to me.
I took my seat, tossed my bag off my shoulder and under my desk, and laid my head on my arms. My head rested sideways as I glanced around the room taking everything in. Everyone was bunched into their groups as Mr.Coleman chatted with a student at the front of the class. Some band kids sat in the middle and talked amongst each other. Autumn and her 2 friends sat more in the back, only a few seats away from me. In front of them seated many of the football team whom I never really enjoyed talking to. And the rest of the class were just people who kept to themselves.
Continuing to take in the room, my eyes drifted back to the other seats in the back that were occupied. My eyes widened in shock as I caught a glance of the same gingered hair from before. No way...
Sitting up in my seat to get a better look, it was clear to me that it was Ethan. In my 3rd-period class. I knew he looked familiar. I took him in as he had his eyes glued to a notebook in front of him, awfully close to it. He held a pencil in his left hand as he scribbled away on the page.
"Okay, everyone sit down. We're about to get started," Mr.Coleman spoke in a louder tone over the chatter in the room. I snapped my eyes back to the front realizing I was staring again. As people found their seats, my head rested on my palm. I spent the rest of the class like this while also taking glances outside the window. Time felt slow as Mr.Coleman talked about a new assignment we had coming up. However, I didn't care much for his words as my eyes found their way to Ethan once again. Unfortunately for me, his eyes met mine as if he felt my staring gaze on him.
We stared at each other for a while before he offered me a small smile. A little taken aback, I returned it with one of my own having no idea how else I was supposed to respond. He turned back to the board, however my eyes felt stuck on his face. What is happening?

After 3rd-period, the rest of the day went by even more slowly. There was absolutely nothing interesting happening in or outside my classes besides regular gossip and drama. Making my way through the 3rd-floor halls, I stopped once I had hit a window that overlooked the courtyard. Whenever I wasn't in my aunt's room, I sat somewhere on this floor as it was usually empty with lunch happening at the same time. Looking around the lunch area, I saw teenagers everywhere; some seated on the grass while others filled up the tables. There were way more people outside today than usual.
"Yo, Seb," I turned my head to the sound and saw Clementine and Noah making their way to me. Jokingly, Noah slung his arm around her shoulder while waving at me, but was pushed off.
"Wassup," I returned, dapping them both up. Noah and Clem had been my best friends for almost 3 years now. It started with me and Noah after I met him at my first party sophomore year. He had taken me with the rest of his baseball friends in an act of just trying to be nice. Yet, I had gotten so drunk that he had to watch me the entire night and eventually leave the party early to have his older brother drop me off at home. A couple of months after, I was introduced to Clem, the baseball manager, and we all slowly started hanging out more until we grew close. Looking at us, you'd never think we were friends by how we dressed, yet we all acted pretty much the same.
Noah had a soft look going for him. His hair was fluffy and a light brown color that looked nice in the sunlight. He had soft features too paired with his light green eyes and dark freckles. Standing in front of me, he wore a white shirt with an opened blue button-up, baggy jean shorts, and Adidas. He loved his whole baseball look, and to be honest, so did the girls. To top it off, he wore glasses that fit his face nicely. He was a pretty good-looking guy, almost kind-looking too, yet that was far from the truth.
Clementine was a fashion freak to put it simply. Her style changed every other day; some outfits were more questionable than others, but she didn't care. She tested around with literally anything she could get her hands on. Currently, she was in the '90s/early 2000s type of look. She had her hair in Bantu knots and wore baggy jeans that hung low on her waist. She had paired it with a dark green sports jersey that she tied to make cropped. Her accessories are what brought her outfits together though as she covered herself from head to toe in different shades of gold.
"You heard about that bonfire Autumn's hosting?" My face instantly cringed at the mention of my ex and the bonfire invite that I had previously declined. Seeing my reaction, Noah spoke again, "I see she's already told you about it."
"Yeah, she stopped me yesterday to invite me. Said her friends 'really want' me there."
"And what'd you say?" Noah asked, and I looked at him as if he had grown an extra head. I didn't answer and turned back to look out the window, knowing he understood. Aside from whoever Autumn told about our relationship and breakup, Noah and Clementine were the only ones of my friends who knew how horrific it was.
"Come on, why not?" he whined, shaking my arm. I let out a low huff and moved my arm to rest back down on my side. "This is our first big 'party' this year. And you're last year here, you know?"
I looked at Clem for help to see her typing away at her phone. I gently took it from her to get her attention and asked, "And are you going to go too?" She let out an annoyed huff as she glared at her phone in my hand. She snatched it back with lightning speed and slipped it into her tote bag that matched her outfit.
"Only if y'all are, but he is right. It's our last year and our first party so far. Why not?" she shrugged, agreeing with Noah's point.
"Exactly, we're going," Noah decided. I gave him an unamused look in which he winked at me.
"Fine," I gave in after a couple of seconds of weighing my options. I didn't have anything to do but sit inside and maybe ride around. Maybe a bonfire with my closest friends wasn't the worst way to spend my weekend. Besides, it was my last year in high school; I should make the most of it.
"Aye, that's what I'm talking about," Noah hollered in the hallway, not caring about the annoyed glances he got from a group walking by.
"Bro shut up," Clem said, smacking him in his shoulder. He looked down at where she had hit him before looking back up at her. In a matter of seconds, he had hit her back but harder; the sound probably heard from down the hall. She looked back at him like he was insane and raised her hand to punch him. Yet, I yanked her raised hand, pulling her to stand beside me.
"Can y'all both stop?" Their bickering had to be #1 on my "most annoying shit ever" list. It just never fucking stopped.
"Control your dog," Noah said and turned to Clem to say, "Woof, woof." I let out a genuine laugh as I let go of Clem, not caring what was going to happen to him. She didn't hesitate to "slap the fire" out of his mouth, but not enough to leave a mark.
As they continued going back and forth, I thought back to the bonfire that I had agreed to. There was still a part of me that was skeptical about going and wanting to go back on my word. What's the worst that could happen though?
