"Woah, calm down there, Foster," Keefe said. "Your emotions are all over the place."
Sophie was about to confess until she remembered that Keefe wasn't going with anyone else either. A small flame flickered within her. "I'm fine," She said, pushing past him. "I'm just in a rush to the library."
"Not with that attitude," Keefe said, pulling her by the obnoxious orange half-cape she wore for her uniform. "Seriously Foster, what's up?"
"Nothing," Sophie said, pushing her feelings into a deep pit to where Keefe wouldn't find them.
"C'mon, Foster..." Keefe begged. "How are we supposed to be the invincible Team Foster-Keefe if you won't tell me anything?"
"Not right now," Sophie said, pushing past him, slipping out of his grasp this time.
"Alright. But I expect an explanation later!" Keefe called after her.
Sophie just shook her head and left for the library.
-----------------------------------------
Keefe didn't let it go. Sophie was trying to study the books she had gotten for her Telepathy Midterm during Study Hall, but to no avail. Keefe kept sliding her notes.
So were you going to tell me?
Don't ignore me, Foster.
I'll find out sooner or later.
Then Keefe sent her the last one.
I have some news for the Black Swan.
Sophie whipped her head in Keefe's direction. He smirked. Sophie slid him a note.
What'd you find out?
Keefe shook his head. "You tell first," He mouthed.
Sophie sighed. He was hopeless. "Open your mind," Sophie mouthed back.
Keefe nodded, closing his eyes.
I swear Keefe, it was nothing. She transmitted. A headache burst in her mind. She forgot all about the circlet. Sandor quickly handed her the serum. She instantly felt better after gulping some down.
I guess I found nothing then. Keefe thought. And how cool is this? I finally get to have secret conversations with the Mysterious Miss F!
Sophie let out another exasperated sigh. He was really hopeless.
Was it something Fitz said? Keefe thought.
Sophie froze. How did you know?
Keefe smirked. I have my methods. And I'll take that as a yes, by the way. What did he say?
Sophie shrugged. We were just talking about the ball.
A smug grin creeped onto his face. I assume he mentioned that we don't have dates, right?
Sophie only nodded.
Makes sense. Keefe thought. Fitz always forgets human customs. I was always better at Human Studies anyway.
Human customs? Sophie transmitted.
Yeah. Having dates is really only a human thing. Elves have Match Makers, remember?
Yeah, I know. Sophie transmitted. I just assumed you guys would go on dates. I didn't think that was much different than the Forbidden Cities.
Keefe nodded. It's pretty different. You CAN date before you get your Match Making lists, but it's pretty taboo. That's why a lot of people disproved of Jolie and Brant together, even before they were a bad match.
The headache was coming back. Sophie continued by passing notes.
So were you going to tell me about what you found? Sophie wrote.
Oh yeah, I didn't find much. Just that something is definitely going to happen soon.
Sophie internally moaned. She wasn't looking forward to more attacks from the Neverseen.
Bells chimed the end of school, and Keefe walked her to the leaping crystals. "I'm glad we got that cleared up," he said. "I'd hate for my best friend to miss a dance with their crush."
Sophie froze. "Just save me a dance, Foster!" He said before the light swept him away.
No matter how many times Sophie replayed it in her mind, she couldn't tell if the best friend Keefe was referring to was her or Fitz.
