Chapter 4

After days of walking aimlessly with no destination, I found myself wandering into a town. The cute little town reminded me of Drake and the place I'd just left behind.

It was about midday when I had arrived here. That left me plenty of time to find shelter for the night. Hopefully I could find one kind person here that would spare a bed or couch.

Imagining sleeping on a bed, made me smile. The past few days of sleeping in trees and caves made me crave the soft comfort of a bed.

Lost in my thoughts, I hadn't notice that I had wandered to the other end of the town. The rows of little stores and businesses had been replaced by a few scattered houses on either side of the road.

As I came to a halt, I noticed a small dirt road that led up to a hill on my right. On top of the hill stood an old motel that looked ready to collapse at any second. Perfect place for a girl on the run to rest for the night.

I quickly climbed the hill, the anticipation of a warm bed bringing me energy. Maybe I'll be able to find a meal or two to eat before I leave in the morning.

My stomach growled at the thought of food. I'll definitely need food if I'm going to survive.Pushing the heavy door open, it revealed a dusty worn down room with an old desk and a couch that didn't like it could even support a small child's weight.

I carefully made my way over to the cluttered desk. A small bell sat on the edge of the desk, but since an evil looking spider sat on top daring me to risk my life and ring the bell, I decided to ignore the bell.

"Hello?" I yelled out, "Anyone home?"

A muffled response came from down the hallway, and a small old man hobbled over to the desk.

"Are you here to steal my muffins?" He asked, glaring at me accusingly over the glasses sliding down his nose.

"Um.. No?" I snorted and tried not to laugh at the serious expression on his face.

"Lola made them just for me. If you're going to steal muffins, go steal Henry's. That good for nothing pest doesn't deserve my sweet little Lola's blueberry muffins. All he does is complain about everything. He should get his muffins stolen."

"I"m not here to steal anybody's muffins, sir."

"Don't touch Sophie! Mad woman! I should call the police!" He scrambled out of the room as fast as he could.

I was left standing in the middle of the room more confused than I've ever been. I think that man might have a few screws loose in his head.

A girl about my age walked into the room from the direction the old man left. Her eyes widened at the sight of me standing there. I guess they didn't get much business around here.

"Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry about Gramps, he's a bit crazy. He told me some lady was here to hurt his tomato plant, Sophie," she explained.

"Ah. Well I'm no tomato killer. I was just wondering if you had a room I could use for the night. I..uh.. I don't have any money to pay for it though."

"Did you run away from home?"

"Not exactly. I just had to leave for a while, and didn't have time to get any money," I said, looking at my feet in embarrassment.

She looked at me for a moment, as if considering if I was lying or not.

"Well you look like you've been through a lot. I'll give you a room for the night. It's not like the rooms are really worth charging much for anyways. I'm Lola by the way."

"Thank you so much! My name's Kalilah."

Lola smiled at me, and led me down a hallway to a room number 17. She pulled a key out of her pocket, placing it in my hand.

"Gramps and I live in room 2 on the other side of the lobby if you need anything," she said with a wave, disappearing down the hall we came from.

I slipped the key into the lock, and gently pushed the door open. Walking into the room, I slipped off my shoes and flung myself onto the bed.

My body melted into the bed. I was so exhausted, even the hard springy mattress was unnoticeable. I didn't even bother to take me jacket off or pull a blanket over me.

With a sigh, I let myself fall into the land of peace and dreams.
