My mother shrieked, the pitch of her voice made it really easy to hear, I happened to be waking up from it. I slowly rise up out of bed and put on my slippers, my tiredness making it hard to comprehend what is actually going on downstairs, but I made it down there anyway. She was on the floor crying... All rolled up in a ball. Sobbing her eyes out, I could hear her mumbling "I'm dead... I'm dead..." I was still tired, my eyes were half shut, but I still asked what was wrong.

"Samantha, I'm so dead. She's going to kill me." My mothers shaking voice mumbled toward me. I asked what was wrong again, but I didn't even need to ask. I look over to see that our only two potatoes were cooked, full of butter and sour cream, sprinkled with a little bit of spices, perfectly made for dinner, splattered among the floor. I knew why my sister Sasha was going to be the one to kill my mother.

I picked the ruined potatoes up off the floor and made my way toward the garbage bin, and dumped them into it. All the spices and such were covering my hands, and I go wash it off in the kitchen sink. As I'm washing, I start yelling at the woman that is still lying on the floor, trying to be louder than her so she can hear me. "Mother, I will run to the store and get a few more potatoes if I have to. I can try to be back before she shows up, and maybe you wont be dead tonight!" She finally decided to sit up and actually talk, and she said "Samantha, if you do that I would be so thankful that I might even let you buy your own dinner if you would like."

I told her no, I would just get the potatoes without any reward. As I'm putting my shoes on, I hear the door swing open. It was my father, drunk as always, coming home from work. But this time, he had tears streaming down his face. Oh great, another member of my family crying. Why does everyone in this house have to be such crybaby drama queens?

"Look, I have to go get some potatoes before I come home to the corpse of my mother, so I'll figure this all out when I get home. I will be right back." I head down the street to the nearby market and grab a whole bag of the stuff that is going to keep Sasha sane, and I go home as soon as possible. On my way back I see others on the street, they were crying too. Is it the same reason my Dad is crying?

I sprinted my way home and after about two minutes I make it up the doorstep. "Dad! What's going on?! I saw a ton of people outside crying!" There was a thump on the door. It was the newspaper.

"Samantha, I want you to read that paper right now. Take it up to your room and close the door. Now." Declared my mother, with a serious look to her face.

"Alright alright I will. Where's Sasha? I brought the po..."

"Go."

I turned around and started working my way up the stairs and into my bedroom. Before I am able to even take a seat on my bed, my phone rings. It was my commander, Mr. Erwin Smith.

"Hello Samantha, we have some terrible news. We need you as soon as possible, and bring all your gear. I'm actually going to send you a cab so I can have you supervise one of our younger cadets too. See you in a few minutes."

Before I got to ask any questions or say anything, he hung up the phone. I didn't even get to sit down and read the newspaper, so I shoved it in my bag with my phone, wallet, and a few other essentials. My gear was waiting for me in the corner.
