Everyone always wanted a famous parent right? Well, I always used to think it was the best thing, to have my dad be one of the most hired music producers in the United States. But that was when I was young. I used to get a kick of meeting famous people! Eventually, it grew old and I lost interest and stopped caring about my dad’s occupation. I actually despise the fact that he’s still so wanted in the music industry, he’s never home and he’s always traveling. Even now, the week of my high school graduation, he’s not here. As far as I know, he won’t be here for another two weeks. He’s somewhere in London meeting some new clients of his, a boy band, One Direction. As much as I used to love NSYNC and Westlife when I was younger, boy bands don’t fascinate me anymore. But apparently, they are extremely famous in the UK. So, they must be good.

I just closed my diary shut after writing my entry for the day, when I heard the phone ring.

I quickly answered, “Hello?”

“Hey, sweetheart, I just wanted to check up on you.” It was my dad, doing his hourly check in with me.

“Um, hey. Yeah I’m fine. You don’t need to check up on me every hour, Dad. Seriously. I’m 18. I’m graduating this Saturday. I’m perfectly capable of taking care of my—“

He cut me off and simply said, “Gotta run, much love.” Then there was a beep that indicated that he had hung up on me.

Naturally, I was pissed, but it was whatever. I only had a few more months of living in this dreadful house anway. There was no use in being stressed about nothing. I mean I loved my dad, I really did, but sometimes, he was just a full on pain in the ass.

My dad must have been really busy, as he hadn’t called me since he abruptly had to end his call with me last Sunday. It was Friday night, and I was worried. But I shrugged it off, he’s just probably really busy with work. My best friend Milly was spending the night at my house anyway, I could finally keep my thoughts invested in something other than my dad. But until Mill showed up, I had to do dishes.

At around 8, I heard a knock on the door, I shouted out “It’s open Mills! I’m in the kitchen!”

Soon after I heard the door open and close, I turned around to see my best friend, her smile wide, holding a tub of my favorite ice cream and my favorite movie – Mint Chocolate Chip and She’s the Man.

This was why I loved Milly, she knew and remembered everything about me. Of course we had everything in common. We were the top of our class, executives of our student body and co-captains of the varsity soccer team. But, I was a little less out there than she was. I kept to myself most of the time and despite the many friends that I had, Milly was the only one I was truly comfortable around.

The movie finished near midnight, Milly and I went up to my room to have our last late night talk of our high school lives. I couldn’t believe that it had already been 4 years since I first stepped into Cabrillo High School. This was it. I was going to be on my own soon, well not really. I’d have Milly, of course. Still, it was so unbelievable that in just a few hours, I’d be finished with high school and enjoying my last summer in before college.

Milly and I had been reminiscing for about an hour about insignificant and silly things like boys that we had dated or crushed on during high school, or girls we hated, suddenly the tone of our conversation changed.

“Hey Riley?” asked Milly in a concerned tone.

I answered a little confused, “Yeah Mills? What’s up?”

“Aren’t you upset that your dad’s not going to be here tomorrow?” she asked with the most sincere look on her face.

I had to lie. My dad was a touchy subject especially now that he’s gone all the time. I quickly replied with a “Not really. But it’s getting late, and I’m tired. Let’s just go to sleep now. We have to wake up early tomorrow, you know, it is our graduation day.”
