Chapter One: Stars Arise
The first thing you remember is a night that went on forever.

You were atop the roof of a house that was not your own, held tightly in the arms of someone who was not your mother. It had been some time since you had seen your mother, but you forgot to be frightened, staring into infinite darkness. You thought you could have stared for the rest of your long, long life and never seen a pinprick of light.

You don't know how long you watched before the crash. Someone screamed. The ground rumbled. The whole city shook, from the roof beneath your feet to the arms that were holding you even closer than before.

And the sky above you exploded into stars.
