Your mother told you the site where the first of the Remnant Stars fell would be the best place to raise a ghost. Each of the Remnant Stars left behind some trace of their power where they first fell from their constellations above to the mortal earth: a shadow wrought into the ground. An ever-burning flame. A wind-tossed lake. A crater where nothing living will sprout. Wonders throughout the country, stretching back through history. And the oldest among them, where the first Remnant Star fell from the constellation you call the Faithful Servant: a garden where nothing has died in five hundred years.

You've been to the Servant's Garden twice before. The first time was when you were born there, twenty-five years ago, when your mother called on the Faithful Servant to form you from starstuff, the same way she'd sprung to life from the Star itself five centuries past. Tonight, as you gaze down on the Garden from a lonely mountain path, you find yourself remembering your second visit: a few years after your mother lost her throne and the two of you fled the city of Kelestri, when she handed you a sliver carved from a Remnant Star for the first time and told you to bring its magic to life.
