Before my curiosity could get the better of me, the older looking man started speaking. "Hello everyone, I am the new owner of this school, you can address me as Mr. Diallo, and I will be changing a few things..." He started, his face unmoving, letting his statement linger for a few seconds so that he could scan the crowd "First, your principal will be retiring and Mr Hernandez will be taking over." He points towards a short, tan man with a mustache. "There will be new school uniforms assigned and a background check will be done on each student to ensure that non of you are putting anyone or yourselves in danger, and lastly the school itself will be renovated so you will be attending another school of mine for the time being. Any question?" Mr. Diallo asked waiting a split second and continuing "Great. I will give you today and tomorrow to clear out your lockers and anything you hold dear. Starting Wednesday you will be going to-" He was cut off by the gym door slaming open "I am sorry for disturbing sir..." A female dressed in the same attire as the bodyguards says walking over to the man standing in front of us, when she is standing next to him she whispers something to him.
Whatever she whispered makes the man turn back to as "Damn she's hot." Amo whispers to us "Yeah." We agree still wondering what's going on "Is there a Khaya Ruby here?" The man asks his stoic, unmoving stature still in place "Yeah, that's me." I respond with a matching tone "There are cops outside wanting to speak with you." He tells me. Fuck, I curse mentally eyeing Ivy to come with me.
We both stand but the man stops Ivy "And where are you going, only miss Khaya is needed." He questions "She's been sleeping at my house for the past two days and is going to be doing so until Friday. Her parents requested that if anything were to happen while they are away I should always be with her and call my parents in case anything happens." She responds to him, coming up with a quick lie. He nods waving his hand in a manner that dismisses us, so we follow the lady outside.
Standing by the school entrance are two officers, a man and a woman, next to them is another female bodyguard "Something's off." Ivy whispers into my ear, eyeing the bodyguard standing next to the officers "Yeah, keep an eye on them." I say as the lady that brought us here joined her friend and stood a few feet away from the officers, presumably to give us privacy "Which one of you is Khaya Ruby?" The male officer asks "That would be me. Is there an issue?" I respond "I am officer Lidya and this is officer Michael. We received an anonymous call from someone this morning saying there was a house on fire a couple of miles out of town. Upon further investigation we regret to inform you that we found the remains of your adoptive mother. Unfortunately we did not find any of your father's remains, all we found were ripped clothes and a pool of blood a few feet away from the fire leading us to believe it was a planned murder..." this time the lady, officer Lidya spoke shocking me.
Since I have to make them think I'm in shock because of my parents death I start crying "What? What's going to happen to me now?" I question walking into Ivy's embrace to make it more believable. I watch from the corner of my eye as the two bodyguards and the officers give me pitying looks. Pity. I hate it. "We need you to come to the station with us so that we could run a DNA test to see if you have any family on the system, willing to take you in." Officer Michael says with a sad undertone in his voice. Ugh! Can we get this pver with!? I question mentally. "Okay." I say with a tremble in my voice, damn I should win an Oscar for this amazing performance.
Just then the gym door opened and all the student came piling out "Is it okay if my friends come with me?" I question, not wanting to go woth them "Of course sweetheart." Officer Lidya responds, so I grab Ivy's hand and walk over to the gym door "Damn girl that was an Oscar worthy performance! Who knew you could cry on command!?" Ivy rants, still shocked from what happened "Yeah, but we have bigger fish to fry right now!" I say, stress about the situation "Oh yeah, the whole family thing." She says and I wave my hand, finally sporting Amo and Penelope "What's going on? Where you crying!?" Penelope asks seeing the tear streaks on my cheeks "No I wasn't actually crying, but we have to go to the Police station." I say giving them a vague answer "Ok? But why?" Amo asks eyeing the man that just walked out of the gym.
"Ze hebben Helen's lichaam gevonden." (They found Helen's body.) Ivy answers switching to Dutch, catching Amo's train of sight "Hoe zit het met de andere?" (What about the other one?) Amo asks still eyes the Diallos "Ze vonden zijn lichaam niet, ze vonden alleen een plas bloed en gescheurde kleren." (They didn't find his body, they just found a pool of his blood and torn clothes.) I answer now also looking at the Man standing a few feet away from us "Let's go, we can continue talking about this in the car." I say
"Hello, I'm assuming you two are her other friends?" Officer Lidya asks making Amo and Penelope nod "Great, are there more of you?" She asks and I shake my head, no "Okay then, we need to go now." This time it's Officer Michael that speaks up "Is it ok if we drive our car? We'll follow you." I ask hoping I don't have to go with them "sure." Officer Lidya answers with a sad smile on her face, probably thinking I need 'moral support', ugh can let's just get this over with.
Arriving at the station, officer Lidya asks Penelope, Ivy and Amo to wait in one room while I get taken into another room to take a DNA test and for questioning. Inside the room there's a table with three glasses and a jug of water on top of it. Two chairs sit on either side of the table "Do you want to take the DNA test first or should we do questioning?" Officer Michael asks gesturing for me to sit down "Can we do the questioning first, I'd like to get it out of the way." I respond with a sad tone, sotting down with my head hung low "Ok, the Children's protective Woman assigned to you, Miss Odessa, will join us after you answer a few questions. Would you like anything to drink?" Officer Lydia says this time while they both sit down in front of me "um, just a water would be fine." I say and officer Lydia starts asking the questions while officer Michael pours us all a glass of water "Could you tell us what your parents did for a living? We checked on the system but there was nothing labeled." She asks "My father worked as a provate account, while my mother worked as a architect." I respond glad that I took Hinata's laptop and the papers for the Mafia "How did they even adopt you without their jobs being listed?" Officer Lidya talks to herself looking over her notes
"Did your parents have any feuds or did they fight with anyone?" Officer Michael asks this time, eyebrows knitted together in confusion "Not that I know of... although there was an old Maxican man that would come to the house every other year demanding "progress..." although I don't know what that means. He always looked angry." What I don't tell them is that they have angry calls every other week with several different people. "Can you describe this man for us?" Officer Micheal asks while Lydia takes down what I'm saying "No I can't, whenever he would come over, my mother would always push me upstairs and tell me to stay in my room..." (lie) "but once I caught a glimpse of him... all I know is he is a tall man with tan, almost caramel, skin and a gruff voice that sounds like he'd been smoking 10 pack cigarettes for the past 10 years everyday." (Another lie) this should keep them off my tale.
"Ok I think that's all we need to know, Miss Odessa will be in with the DNA test, along with your friends shortly, although they'd have to leave in an hour. You'll br staying in one of the rooms upstairs." Officer Lidya says standing up "there are rooms upstairs?" I ask curious as to why "Yes, we occasionally help wondering homeless children." She answers smiling "ok then." I say nodding my head as they walk out. And as stated before, a lady dressed in a black knee length pencil skirt and an off white/cream coloured blouse, which I'm assuming is Miss Odessa, walks in with my friends behind her.
"Hello, my name is Odessa McCarthy, but you can just call me Miss Odessa. I am here to take you DNA sample for the test." She introduces herself using me a sorrowful smile. Ugh.
