Chapter Three
Alex sighed and walked out of the room. Kara waited for the door to close before grabbing a chair from the corner of the room and bringing it closer to the bed.
"Please wake up, Lena. I need you" Kara begged. Laying her head down on the bed, tears, once again, falling.
Hours had passed and Lena still wasn't awake. Maggie and Alex had joined Kara in the room. Both were worried. It seemed like this was maybe more serious than they thought.
"Kara, you need to get some sleep and you really need to eat." Alex saw her about to protest but raised her hand. "No, Kara. she'll need your support when she wakes up."
"She's right." Doctor Hamilton told her, entering the room. "This is more serious than I originally thought." She said solemnly.
"What? Why? What's going on with her?" Kara asked her, jumping off the chair she was sitting in.
"Kara, you should sit back down." Kara sits down slowly.
"Just spit it out, please."
"It's cancer." Kara and Maggie gasp while Alex just looks down. "I'm sorry, It's stage two breast cancer."
"Is it curable?" Maggie asked, Kara, was frozen, looking at Lena, unable to speak.
"Stage two has a really high cure rate. But she'd need to start treatment soon." Alex said, turning to Kara and moving to put a hand on her shoulder, leading Kara to look up at her. "How have you two not noticed anything unusual?" Alex motions to Hamilton that she can handle it from here.
"Lena's been busy with work the last few months, that's the reason why she hasn't shown up to game nights," Kara told her, rubbing a hand through her hair.
"Oh," Alex said and then put it together. "But that still doesn't explain why you haven't noticed anything that may be off."
Kara looked down. "I've been busy with this new reporter position so we haven't been spending much time together. We try to have lunch every day but obviously, this is life and life happens." Kara paused and looked up. "When we stay over at each other we normally just eat something and go to bed. But how the hell do I not notice a lump or something in her breast?"
"Did you two ever, ya know, in the last few months?" Alex asked.
"We haven't had time, Alex. Pretty sure I just told you we barely had time to eat. Let alone," Kara blushed, "Ya know."
Maggie tried to hold in her laughter after seeing the younger Danver sister blush. "Little Danvers," Kara looks at Maggie "No matter what happens we'll be here for both of you." Maggie walks over to grab Kara's hand, "She's strong, Kara. She'll get through this."
"It may be curable but there are still dangers. Lots of dangers."
"Kar, It'll be okay. We're going to do everything we can to help Lena."
"Help Lena with what?" the three women turn to the bed and see Lena blinking, trying to adjust to the light. "What's going on?" Lena looked around. "Where am I?"
Kara grabs one of Lena's hands, "You're in the DEO, Lee." Lena looked at Kara, fear in her eyes.
"Why?" Lena choked out.
"You collapsed at work, Lena. Jess had to call to tell me and then we brought you to the DEO." The three women watch the confusion wash over Lena's face before realization hit. "What's wrong with me?"
Kara looks down, tears in her eyes, knowing this will hurt her girlfriend. "Lee,"
"Just tell me, Kara."
"It's bad," Kara paused for a couple of seconds, "Lena, you have stage two breast cancer." Kara watched Lena's face turn into a frown and then utter devastation showed. "I'm so sorry, Lena."
Kara watched Lena's face and watched her eyes close. "Treatable? I mean, I know it is, but the survivor rate is what I meant to ask about."
"Lena, the survivor rate is above 90%," Alex told her. "You just need to make a decision."
"Surgery," Lena said shortly, turning her head to face Kara, eyes watery. "Whatever will help get me back to 100% the quickest."
"You'll have to do this in a hospital, Lena. They're more equipped than us." Lena closed her eyes again.
"Fine." Lena leans back into the pillow, "When would I need to go?"
"Doctor Hamilton wants you to gain some strength back before doing anything else, Okay? So that means getting some sleep. Right now, Lee." Kara told her, giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"Alright you two, wait for us to leave. We'll leave you be." Maggie told her, getting up, Alex following behind.
"Kar?"
"Yeah?" Kara asked, brushing some hair out of Lena's face.
"Don't leave me."
"Never. I will never leave." Kara said, putting a hand on Lena's cheek.
"You promise?" Lena looked into Kara's eyes.
"Baby, I promise. I will never leave you. Nothing could make me leave you. Nothing." Kara told her holding eye contact. "I love you," Kara told her, pulling her in for a kiss.
Lena pulled back breathlessly, "I love you too, darling."
