Chapter Four
"Baby, I promise. I will never leave you. Nothing could make me leave you. Nothing." Kara told her while holding eye contact. "I love you," Kara told her, pulling her in for a kiss.
Lena pulled back breathlessly, "I love you too, darling."
Kara watched Lena lean back into the bed and sigh and felt her heartbreak. Hasn't her girlfriend been through enough? Her fucked up family. Her brother's horrible actions led everyone to believe that she was just like him. And now this. Fucking cancer. Lena doesn't deserve this. FUCK CANCER! Kara thought, sitting down next to the bed, still holding Lena's hand.
"Lee, you should get some rest before we go to a hospital tomorrow." Kara hesitates. "Are we going to yours or somewhere else?"
Lena's eyes fly open. "Somewhere else!" I don't need everyone asking questions about what's going on with me!"
Kara put the hand that wasn't holding Lena's up in the air, in mock surrender. "Sorry. Sorry. Just thought I'd check." Kara watched Lena nod her head and close her eyes again. "Try to sleep, Lee. I'll be right here the whole time. I promise." Kara told her, squeezing her hand. She felt Lena squeeze back, silently agreeing. Kara pulled out her phone and texted her sister.
Hey, Alex, would you mind going to my apartment to grab a blanket for Lena? I convinced her to try to get some sleep.
It took a couple minutes, but Alex soon replied.
Which one? You have like 20.
The blue one on my couch. Kara answered right away. Just bring it as soon as you can, please. I want her to sleep before she has to go to the hospital tomorrow and I can tell she's cold.
Don't worry. Maggie is with me, and we have her bike. We'll be there in less than 10.
Kara read the text and put her phone away, trusting Alex to keep her word. She put her focus on Lena's face, seeing her brows furrow she brought a hand up to Lena's forehead, gently rubbing it, instantly calming her. Kara smiled softly, glad she could still bring, at least, a little bit of comfort to her girlfriend. Kara was starting to doze off, so she carefully got onto the bed next to Lena, pulling her into her arms and was happy when Lena curled herself into her.
It was five minutes later when Alex and Maggie arrived, and the couple couldn't help but let out an aww's seeing the couple cuddled up like they were. Alex moved towards the bed and lowered the blue blanket over the two of them.
The couple stood in silence, neither knowing what to say when Alex heard Kara begin to talk in her sleep.
"Shit." Alex cursed. "Maggie," Alex started, eyes not drifting away from the bed, "I need you to leave the room."
Maggie, not knowing what was happening, was going to ask Alex what was going on, but decided against it and left, not saying a word.
After Maggie left the room Alex closed the door and walked over to the bed. Alex gently picked up Kara's free hand and squeezed it, hoping to stop whatever nightmare was starting for Kara, knowing how important it was for Lena to get her sleep. "Kar" Alex called softly, "I don't know what you're going through right now but I do know that you're in a bed with Lena and as you said, she needs her rest. So, I need you to try to listen to my voice, okay?"
Kara moved, scaring Alex that the nightmare may be getting worse. "Can you chill?" Kara asked. "It was just a dream."
Alex, sighing, hit her sister on the arm. "For fucks sake, Kar. You know when you talk in your sleep, you're usually having a nightmare so you can't really blame me for thinking the worst."
"I never said I blame you. I just said, "Can you chill". I get I can worry you sometimes, but right now I'm a lot more concerned about Lena." Kara told her, opening her eyes she looked at her sister. "I'm sorry. I know when I have nightmares they can be terrifying, but I barely have them when I'm around Lena." Kara told her, a soft smile on her face.
Alex smiled at her sister. "Good to know, Kar. I'm going to go with Maggie back home to get some sleep. You and Lena going to be okay here?"
"Yeah, we'll get some sleep and then tomorrow morning we'll head over to National City Memorial."
"Okay. Just please let me know how everything went, okay? I know I gave the basic rundown, but the hospital will give better advice on treatments than we ever could here since we mostly deal with, yunno, aliens." Alex tried to joke, knowing that these upcoming months would be extremely hard on everyone close to the two women.
Kara nods her head and closes her eyes with Andy running a hand over her head. Alex stayed in the room, making sure that the two were comfortable and asleep when she heard a whimper come from the bed. She turned around, just knowing it was from Lena and walked over to Lena's IV, upping her pain meds, hoping that was the only struggle Lena would face through the next few hours.
Alex walked down the corridor, into one of the bunk rooms in the DEO and when she saw Maggie her face just crumbled.
"I know. I know, Al." Maggie said, getting off the bunk and walking to her girlfriend to rub her arms. "It's going to be okay. Lena is strong. She'll get through this."
Alex sighed into the hug Maggie pulled her into. "God, I hope so. Kara can't take any more loss in her life just when she was starting to get it back on track after Mon-El."
"I know she was devasted, but I don't think she was ever in love with Mon-El like she is with Lena. We have to make sure we're doing everything we can for Lena."
Maggie nods, looks into Alex's eyes and then pulls her into a kiss. "We'll be there for anything they need." Maggie pulled her back into her, "I'll be there for you every step of the way too."
