/No POV/
"D-dad... I'm sorry- I didn't mean to-" Hiccup started, but his father cut him off, shouting, "WHAT DID YOU DO?? Didn't we all tell you to STAY INSIDE?!"
The small boy nodded, trying to will away the tears in my eyes. He was shaking violently, but nobody could tell if was in fear or hidden anger. 'Why won't you let me help you!? Why do you have to be so mean?? Why am I so useless? I'm such a bad son-'Stoick turned sharply to ensure that everything was alright, and the crowd around them soon dissipated. The pair didn't notice that there was still somebody watching them in plain sight. Blank face, eyes looking like e/c blackholes.
They didn't display any emotion as they watched Hiccup get yelled at by his own father, the Chief in public. When Stoick left Hiccup, the person left, deeming the argument done, flames in the background, houses in ruins.Days later, that same person (Although Hiccup didn't know) was in his group for dragon slaying classes. This 'Uknown' figure was Y/n. They usually kept quiet about themself, avoiding everyone as much as possible.
For some reason, the only person they actually tolerated was the small, skinny Male Viking. Fishlegs was too nerdy, all Snotlout wanted to do was flirt, Astrid was hot-headed, and the twins were okay as long as they were tame (which isn't often).First training session: The Grunkle. Avoid it to survive. Y/n just stood there, once again emotionless. "What are you doing?!"
Astrid screamed at them, but in return, she received a harsh glare. Y/n didn't engage when the dragon decided that they would be its next target.
Instead, they decided to follow behind the dragon, shield-less. Nobody could even hear Y/n's footsteps as they followed silently behind the hovering Grunkle.
Nor did they point out their figure, because that enough was bad, but without a shield? Worse. Slowly, people started to get their shield hit, and were disqualified. This went on until it was just the three of them. Astrid, Y/n, and Hiccup. Astrid dashed the other way while Hiccup's shield was thrown out of his hand by a burst of fire. Cornered against a wall, Y/n slides between the two before the dragon had a chance to get in close, Hiccups shield that had recently been flung now in their hands.
Another blast, and the fire bounced off the shield as Y/n swing it away (like a parry with a sword [Botw&Totk vibes]). Hiccup wasn't given the chance to thank the strange viking because he was stuttering too much. Y/n just placed a hand on his shoulder and looked him hard in the eye, saying nothing.Hiccup could've sworn that there was concern laced in them; but before he got good look, Y/n was ripped away from him by Tuffnut fanboying over them.
"Remember!" Gobber voiced, "Dragons will ALWAYS go for the kill." Gobber looked pointedly at Hiccup, and he turned away, embarrassed.
Y/n had yet to say anything, staring at the spot in between Tuffnut's eyes. Eventually, Tuffnut noticed and got weirded out. He turned around and crossed his arms, huffing as he walked over to his twin, Ruffnut.
Hiccup watched as Y/n turned around, facing his line of view, where they sighed and tugged on the collar of their shirt uncomfortably. Then, Y/n walked up to Hiccup, sucking in their breath as they offered their hands to Hiccup.
Of course, Hiccup took the hand, and when Y/n pulled him up, he almost went flying.
Hiccup attempted to smile once stable, but he was still shaken up from the dragon (and the help from a few seconds ago), legs wobbling.
Y/n set his arm around their shoulders, and they both hobbled over to the dining hall.
Hiccup was shaken to his very core by the kindness, as nobody had ever cared to be nice to him.
Thor's hammer, he was the town's laughingstock!
Why were they playing nice?Y/n set him down near a bench with the others softly, before sitting beside him. Hiccup was staring at Y/n like they were a two headed horse- scared (Because why would there be TWO heads on a HORSE?!) but happy (For the food), while everyone else either ignored or didn't know they were there.
"Where did Astrid go wrong today?" Gobber asked, and Astrid grumbled, "I mistimed my summersault dive. It threw off my reverse tumble."
Whilst the others were trying to cover for her mistake, saying things like; "You did great Astrid." and "You'll do better next time." Gobber pointed out, "No! It's good to be hard on yourself. You have to be tough."
Hiccup stood up and went to go and get food, causing the attention to go on himself as Gobber asked, "Now, where did Hiccup go wrong?" The first and most insulting were:
"He showed up" and "He didn't get eaten." By Ruffnut and Tuffnut. Y/n made sure to elbow them in the sides the pair groaned and held their stomachs as Hiccup sat back down again, taking the criticism. After a few more comments, Gobber set down the Dragon manual, suggesting that they all read it. Snotlout complained about reading, while Fishlegs ranted about reading the book seven times. Y/n just rolled their eyes.
It was a rare sight, and most missed it, but Hiccup didn't. When everyone but Astrid, Hiccup, and Y/n left, Hiccup asked, "I guess we'll share?" Astrid stood and said, "Read it." then left, not even bidding goodbye or letting Hiccup finish his sentence.Hiccup looked at Y/n, who had flipped to the last page to find it mostly empty. Nightfury as the title, but no words. Nothing. They scoffed, closed the book, and handed it to the boy.
After a pat on the back, they were gone, and he was alone. He sighed and sat down in his seat, book still in his arms.Hiccup felt small. And lonely.
He didn't know what to do so, he just left the book on the table and went back to his house.
