The car door slammed shut behind me as I stepped into what was to be my new hell. Forks Washington, a town in the middle of nowhere that I hadn't even heard of before mum decided to pack us up and move. The air was damp and heavy with the promise of a rain shower to come. The trees stood so tall that their tops were obstructed by the light fog which had settled on the area. I hadn't been into the main town yet but somehow i knew that the weather would not differ at all.
I hated it already, but I would never tell my mother that. After what my father, no he was just my sperm donor at this point, had done to our family I swore I wouldn't make my mum feel that any of it was her fault.
The door to the driver's side echoed the slam with which I had shut mine and the sound of heels on the wet pavement followed. Click clack. A beautiful, slim brunette rounded the front of the car and came to stand by me. Her back was straight and she held her head up with pride. Even at 5'6 my mum managed to tower over me, though that was mostly due to her 6 inch red bottoms.
My mum was a luxurious woman and a cheating husband was not about to take that away from her. At thirty-nine she still had flawless skin with the exception of the smile lines which creased her cheeks and crinkled slightly around her gentle eyes. Back in California, she was the envy of the neighbourhood housewives, many believed that she had undergone comestic procedures, but the truth is that she hadn't, her secret; leaving her problems behind, even the ones that cheated on you after you had dedicated your whole life to making them happy.
I smiled at her as she pulled off her sun glasses to admire our new home. Well not new at all with the slightly peeling white paint and growth of moss on the gutters, it was much smaller than our old house but carried a lot of charm. It had a nice wrap around porch with a swinging chair right by the front door, it had two bedrooms and two bathrooms, enough for the both of us. The garden was overgrown with weeds peaking through the cracks in the pavement and the bushes by the house threatening to come inside but it had potential. That's what my mum always said.
"I won't be needing these anymore," she said as she tucked her sunglasses away into her handbag.
"I don't think you'll be needing those either," I gestured to her Louboutins and she pouted, feigning offence at my comment.
"Nonsense, no rain is going to stop me from wearing my favourite shoes,"
"Yeah, but the lack of friction might." We chuckled, the sound travelling through our silent surroundings before I felt her arm snake it's way around my shoulders, drawing me into her warmth that she seemed to radiate.
"I know it's not what you're used to honey, but it's a fresh start, we can do new things here, breathe a little. Literally the air here is so much better than in California. And Did you see the long stretch of road up to here? You can go for your runs uninterrupted."
I nodded slowly, of course my runs. Now that we had moved away from my father I would have to try and get a scholarship into a university in close-by, I didn't want to leave her alone. Hoping she'd take my gesture as an answer and move on to something else. Luckily she did. With a tight squeeze from her hand she moved away to start exploring her new home, the sound of her heels echoing down the driveway. A bark drew my attention.
Of course how could I forget my babies. I had to take them with me, no way was I leaving them in the care of Mr. Cheater and his bimbo assistant. They could enjoy the mansion but not my things. I turned and opened the back door of the SUV. An excited golden retriever jumped out and onto the wet pavement before shaking himself, as if to rid the sluggishness caused by the long hours of our travel from his body. Tyler immediately scurried off into the garden, excited to explore the new place and no doubt mark his territory.
I reached inside and took hold of the blue carrier and my backpack before closing the door. Sir Ronald III hissed softly, scolding me for interrupting his nap.
"Sorry Ronald I gotta get you inside before it starts raining," I said glancing up at the dark clouds pregnant and expecting rain.
I walked up the front steps and into the house, the door had been left open by my mother and I pushed it closed with my foot as I entered. The house smelled humid. The kind of humid your water bottle you hadn't emptied for a week smelled like. I scrunched up my nose and made a not to air the place out. The floor was covered with linoleum glazed wood and the walls had a flowery wallpaper stuck onto them. This was definitely different to what I was used to.
I dropped into a squat and placed the carrier onto the shiny floors before opening the door. "Ok Sir Ronald, step out into your new abode," I said in a mock accent. The fluffy black cat took a few tentative steps out of the cage before changing his mind and retreating back into the comfort of his carrier I sighed and stood back up. I guess Sir Ronald III was not fond of his new living arrangements. Well, he'd have to come out later for food anyways. It'll just take some time to warm up to the place, though nothing about Forks Washington screamed warmth and I didn't blame the grumpy cat for his behaviour at all. Gone were the days he would lounge in the sunlight that streamed through the floor to ceiling length windows. I glanced around the ground floor, it had the necessities, a kitchen, a living room and a small office in the back. After my inspection i ascended the stairs to the first floor to search for my room.
As I reached the top I saw into the open door at the end of the hallway and saw my mother moving around back and forth putting her belongings away. The movers had been here the day before yesterday to deliver our things and cardboard boxes could be seen peaking from around corners. Luckily for us, my mum had managed to charm the men into setting up our beds. Being pretty had it's perks I guess. I looked like my mum in a lot of ways, we shared the same wavy brown hair, full lips and high cheek bones but while she had enticing emerald eyes, I had regular brown ones.
"Vivian start unpacking honey, I want us to have dinner at the diner we saw on our way here. You know the one with the really cute vintage sign," I murmured a yes and walked through a doorway that was to my left. A fairly sized room met me with a double bed pushed up against a corner right by a triangular shaped window with a nice reading nook built into it. The mattress was bare and the floor was covered in a lush carpet. Stacked haphazardly on top of each other in another corner were the boxes containing my life. It was better than I expected, wasn't my dream but it was something oddly nice. I dropped my bag onto the floor before tearing into the boxes, ready to start anew.
