Willow's POV
Sitting in the cafe, engrossed in my book, the familiar ambiance wraps around me like a comforting embrace. The aroma of coffee mingles with the soft murmur of conversations, creating an atmosphere of tranquility. But as I glance up, a new face catches my eye—an unfamiliar presence that sets my heart racing.
Our eyes meet briefly, and in that fleeting moment, a spark of recognition ignites within me. My fingers tighten around the pages of my book, and a wave of unexpected anger washes over me. It's a foreign emotion, one that catches me off guard, but the reason for it is clear.
Approaching me with a tentative smile, the stranger extends his hand. "Hey, I'm Nikolas," he introduces himself.
I shake his hand, my expression guarded. "Willow, a friend of your husband." I reply curtly.
There's a knowing glint in his eyes, a hint of curiosity in his voice. "Are you the one Ciel talks about?"
His question hits me like a jolt, stirring the anger that had been simmering just beneath the surface. I clench my jaw, forcing a strained smile. "Yeah, that's me."
Niko's gaze lingers on my face, as if searching for something more in my reaction. There's a tension in the air, an unspoken understanding of the emotions that churn beneath the surface.
"He told me you've been there for him when I wasn't," Niko continues, his voice tinged with a strange mix of gratitude and something else. "I'm grateful for that."
My reply carries a bite of bitterness, a challenge in my tone. "Well, I'm sure he appreciates having someone to lean on."
The atmosphere remains charged, a silent battle of wills as we exchange forced smiles. Neither of us seems willing to back down, each of us protective of our own role in Ciel's life.
Niko's next words surprise me, his gaze softening with a hint of understanding. "I know. And I'm genuinely thankful."
I'm caught off guard by his sincerity, a flicker of surprise breaking through my defenses. "You don't need to thank me," I say, my tone softening. "I enjoy talking to Ciel. He's become an important friend."
A pause hangs between us, heavy with unspoken thoughts. Niko's next words carry a weight, revealing a touch of jealousy that tugs at my heart.
"I hope it stays that way," he admits, his voice a mixture of gratitude and uncertainty. "I hope you and Ciel remain as friends, nothing more."
His unexpected jealousy surprises me, but I don't back down. I meet his gaze with a mixture of surprise and defiance. "It's not your place to dictate what happens between me and Ciel."
Niko's expression remains earnest, his eyes locking onto mine. "I know. But I'm Ciel's husband. I would like for him to have friends that respects our relationship."
His words hit me hard, stirring a mixture of emotions within me. "Ciel's husband already passed away."
Our locked gaze speaks volumes, an unspoken understanding of the complexities that bind us together. Ciel's presence, even when absent, shapes our interactions, tugging at the threads of our hearts and reminding us of the tangled connections we share, connections that are only just beginning to unravel.
