I suppose channeling the power of the sun into a tiny glass beaker isn't exactly how to demonstrate how water turns into vapor. But can you blame me? I've only been at camp for 4 years, and never has Chiron ONCE thought it was a good idea to train me to control powers that could rip a hole through the atmosphere. But of course, I think I'm the only child of Apollo who can channel the sun that's currently alive, so we don't really know how to train me.
I aimed my index finger at the beaker and felt power rushing through. Seconds before the light hit the water, I regretted my decision. This isn't gonna end well, I realized. My best friend, Ally, looked at me quizzically. I could practically see the gears whirring in her brain. You see, she's not a half-blood. And she doesn't know I am.
Bright light shot out of my finger, and the beaker caused the nearby paper to catch fire. I screamed. Fear shot through my brain, not just because oh my gods I'm going to burn down the chemistry room, but because whenever I channel the sun, a small sun-shaped mark on my right hand glows a sunny yellow. I whipped my left hand back to cover the mark as it faded.
Oh my gods, please, the Mist needs to cover that up!
"Delia, what did you do?!" my chemistry teacher, Mrs. Foster, yelled. "Everyone get back!" Grabbing the fire extinguisher, Mrs. Foster shoved me aside. Ally yanked me towards her.
"What the heck was that?!" she hissed. I smiled sheepishly, but panic brewed inside of me. I can't let her find out.
"I ...don't know," I said. Ally sighed.
"Really? You... don't know what happened?" I shook my head.
"DELIA!!" Mrs. Foster thundered. I winced.
"Yes, Mrs. Foster?" I asked. She motioned to me to come closer. I slowly walked to her desk across the room. She glared at me, and I knew I was in massive trouble.
"You," Mrs. Foster pointed at me, "are going to the principal's office." No, of course having ADHD and dyslexia isn't enough. No, of COURSE being sent to the office every other day due to my ADHD isn't enough. I just HAD to almost set the chemistry lab on fire. I think, as a 9th grader, I may have broken the record for most principal visits in one year.
I snatched my hall pass from her hands and stormed out of the classroom. I glanced out of the corner of my eye, and Ally was whispering to another classmate. That's probably not gonna end well... for me.
