There he was standing on stage. A god as I viewed him, that was until I knew the real him. Colson Baker, better known as Machine Gun Kelly. The man who saved my life back in high school but he would never know that. To him I was just another fan but that was okay. As I stood there in the front row, swaying my hips side to side, bobbing my head back and forth, singing along to his song "Drunk Face." I was the happiest I had ever been now that I was finally seeing Colson, the man I have adored since a young age. Was this reality? Or was this just a dream? At that moment I didn't know but I was enjoying every second.
In only a few hours I would be meeting this man. I could hardly contain my excitement. This was a dream, it had to be. I had always wanted to meet Colson, get to know him on a personal level, maybe have him sign a few things, get a picture or two and a hug. Even if I didn't get those things I was seeing him right in front of me so that was better than nothing, right? I was living a dream many people wish they could experience.
The night was slowly coming to an end. Colson told the crowd that this next song would be his last one for the night. The crowd screamed as they heard the intro of the song. Oh great, this one was the one I had been dreading all night. I watched as Colson took a seat on his stool, then the lights turned to a pretty blue color. "Thank you all for coming out tonight, Atlanta! You've killed it tonight. The best crowd I've played for!" Said Colson. The crowd screamed louder, so loud that I thought I'd lose my hearing. Then came that beautiful, deep voice. "I'm writing you this message just so I can say that I love you," Colson began singing, I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. "I had to let you know that everything about me was you, yeah." He continued. At that moment I lost it, I could no longer hold back the tears. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and began to record the song. Little did anybody know, I had listened to this song when I was at the lowest point in my life and it had helped me. For a second Colson and I made eye contact. His smile reassured me that everything was okay. I returned the smile and sang along with him.
And before I knew it the night was over. He thanked the crowd once more before all of the lights shut off and the bright stadium lights turned on. Just like that, the man I adored was now gone. The night wasn't over for me just yet, I had a backstage pass that would allow me to meet him. The instructor came out on stage and asked everyone to safely exit the building but for those who had the passes to wait in the lobby, he would be out momentarily to let everybody in. I picked up my bag that was full of merchandise and my bottle of water from the ground before I made my way out into the lobby. In that moment I could feel my body get a cold chill from the nervousness becoming more intense. I was meeting Colson Baker in only a few minutes, of course I was going to be nervous.
The instructor came back and instructed everyone to follow him in a single file line, not to push and shove, reassuring us that everyone would get a turn to meet the rockstar. Everyone lined up and followed the instructor to a big open room. There in the middle was Colson, sitting at a table, texting somebody on his phone. The room was filled with silent whispers, others talking out loud, even a few were screaming his name. "First!" The instructor yelled, opening the gate. The first girl walked forward. It seems as if they are having a nice conversation, it all ended shortly after but not before she had her picture taken with the man. "Next!" Yelled the instructor again. The next girl walked forward and as usual, the same process happened. As time passed the line got shorter and next thing I knew I was next in line.
"Next!" The instructor yelled, his loud voice caused me to jump. Well, his loudness mixed with nervousness. I let out a deep breath as I walked forward. "Hi Colson, it's nice to meet you finally." I let out quickly, his smile again reassured me that it's okay. In that moment I felt every single worry drift away. "Don't be so nervous." Said Colson, it was easy for him to say, he wasn't the one meeting himself. I just nodded and went along with what he said. "You saved my life. I'm sure you've heard that before but it's true." I said to him, immediately feeling dumb afterwards but he deserved to know the truth. "My brother, before he passed, he showed me your music. I've never felt more closer to him than when I'm listening to your music." I let slip out, how stupid can I be? He doesn't need to know my life story! "I'm glad that I can help with that. I'm sorry about your brother." Said Colson, his eyes that were now landed on mine filled with sorrow. I shook my head and smiled at the man. "No worries. I know we don't have much time so I was wondering if you could sign a few things?" I asked, he nodded. I gave him a CD and a shirt in which he proceeded to sign both. We had our picture taken by the photographer and I even took some on my phone. As it came time to say our goodbyes he grabbed my hand which caused me to turn and look at him with a confused look. "Stay until the end, please? I'd like to talk to you and get to know you more." Colson pleaded. Oh my god, was this actually happening? THE Colson Baker wants to talk to ME? I nodded and gave him a warm smile. "I'll wait for you." I said to him before going back to the line.
