TRUST DOESNT COME EASY
[ chapter one—the window seat ]Emiline glared at the light-haired woman beside her as she scoffed at the news broadcaster on the radio reported on the recent animal attacks in Beacon Hills.
Her left hand left the steering wheel, switching the radio off. "Animal attacks." She spat, glancing out her window for just a second.
Emiline glanced behind her at Jereme who leaned against the palm of his hand, his headphones blasting music into his ears while his eyelids rested shut, and his body tense.
He was scared. His hand was wrapped around a taser under his shirt, a taser he received from Chris on his tenth birthday.
Pop music began to play as Kate switched radio stations. "What did you do to them?" Emiline finally asked, facing the Argent woman again. "May and Dan? Nothing."
Emiline glanced at the spots of blood on her shirt. "Did you kill them?" Kate inhaled sharply, turning to face the girl as the car came to a rolling stop at the intersection. "I didn't touch them."
Kate's hand met her lipgloss in the cup holder beside her untwisting the cap as the light stayed red, allowing the opposite stream of traffic to flow. Emiline watched the woman as she unscrewed the tube and began to apply the gloss.
The inside of the car was hit with a luminance of green emitted as the traffic lights changed. The gloss thudded as it was tossed back into the cupholder, Kate's hands wrapped around the steering wheel again, her thumbs thumping against it with the beats of the song playing.
Emeline rolled her eyes sighing as she turned to look out her window. "Smile, darling. Your back where you belong." Kate spoke, her eyes darted between the girl beside her and the road ahead of them.
The dark-haired girl stared at the woman in the driver's seat, her brows furrowed at the woman as she moved her head with the pop music playing.
Emiline narrowed her gaze as she saw something running alongside their vehicle, its eyes shone red. She inhaled deeply shifting her gaze to Kate who already knew of the werewolf on the other side of her door.
Her entire being shifted as she noticed the werewolf, her head bops had become less about enjoyment and more about not alerting the creature, her eyes were wide, brows pinning together, and she was already thinking of her next move before she'd even made her first.
Her gaze met Emiline's who was calm, she only hoped the creature would hold up Kate long enough for the girl and the boy in the back seat to get out and run.
Kate looked up at the rearview mirror, not seeing what she'd hoped to see she turned her body completely to look out her window herself.
When she'd turned ahead again her lips were pursed, and brows had softened. It wasn't gone, only in the middle of making its first move.
Emiline shifted her head to look out her window getting to glance at her bag without alarming Kate.
Kate had been moving her body to see their surroundings for minutes now, from inside the car it felt like hours. The Alpha wanted to hold out on making a move, keep the suspension high and their blood pumping.
Emiline gasped as headlights showed at them from a truck turning into the street. "Kate!" The woman gasped slamming her foot on the brake. The truck continued, honking its horn as its tires screeched past them and further down the road.
Relief washed over the younger girl as the car stopped before it came anywhere near an accident between the two vehicles.
"Jesus, Kate." Jereme scoffed rubbing his head as he'd been jolted forward. Kate exhaled deeply, straightening her arms between her and the steering wheel as her head thudded back against the headrest. "Nice driving, Kate."
