It wasn't unusual to be summoned to the Hokage's office so late in the evening. But as Ahsoka walked the familiar hallway towards the office she couldn't help but wonder in exasperation what was so important that it couldn't possibly wait until the following morning.

It had been another long day of training with Team Ro. Itachi had easily proved himself to be worthy of a spot on the team in the week he had been a part of it. But the addition of a new member to a team always caused the trainings to go on for longer, and all Ahsoka wanted to do now was relax in her bed and not move a muscle until the sun came up.

Yet she still managed to conceal her exhaustion as she knocked on the door to the Hokage's office.

"Come in."

Ahsoka twisted the doorknob and stepped inside the circular room that was painted in hues of orange, pink, and dark purple as the light of the fading sun filtered through the window behind the Hokage, who sat quietly at his desk.

Immediately, Ahsoka felt a drop in her stomach. A strange feeling crept up her spine, and her senses told her it was coming from the man in front of her.

"Lord Third?" she asked as she stepped closer to the desk with measured steps.

"Ahsoka, thank you for coming on such a short notice," he said, intertwining his wrinkled hands atop the desk, "But there is a serious matter that was brought up during the council meeting with the daimyo."

Ahsoka's brows furrowed, "Sir?"

She didn't have any connection with the daimyo. She hadn't been involved with any government activities. And she hadn't taken on any missions that were out of the ordinary... at least not for her.

But the somber look on the Hokage's face and the grave feeling of his chakra were doing nothing to ease Ahsoka's wariness.

The old man closed his eyes for a moment, almost as if preparing himself for something. Then he opened them again and began talking.

"As you know, outside threats to the village are at an all time high since the end of the Third Shinobi War. The question about what actions to take in response was heavily debated in today's council meeting," The man took a second to swallow, "And the council has decided to send you, Ahsoka."

Ahsoka only narrowed her eyes in confusion at the grim tone in the Hokage's voice. This wasn't out of the ordinary for her after all. It wasn't something that warranted a such an urgent visit to Hokage. "It—seems like an honor to be chosen for this task, Lord Third. But it doesn't sound much different from my usual work."

The Hokage only stared at her. His hard eyes looking like they holding back a tidal wave that would rock her off her feet at any moment. Ahsoka didn't like that look.

"You will be going on these missions, permanently."

The sense of dread started to tighten even more in Ahsoka's chest, but she still merely blinked. "I-I don't understand..."

The Hokage lowered his gaze to his hands, almost as if he couldn't hold Ahsoka's own. "The delicacy of the missions you will be going on is too great to risk you coming and going from the village after each one. Total discretion is a must, or else all of the Hidden Leaf could be put in jeopardy." He looked up at her then, "You will not be returning to the village until further notice."
